Alpha Mule
Got out last night at about 7pm. I intended to get out earlier, but the spogs were playing up. So I walk to my permission, it’s 1 mile from door to gate. I can drive, but exercise is good for you apparently. 1st bhummer is that cattle are in the first field. They are inquisitive cows and like to follow me around which mucks up the sneaky-sneaky stuff. 2nd bhummer is that the laces swap I did on my nice new boots to stop the creaking, wasn’t as perfect as I was hoping for. So now I’m walking around as if I have a couple of old floor boards strapped to my feet. I head off for the next field figuring how to minimise the creak. 3rd bhummer is a rushed shot as I come out of the trees into the next field. The wee guy spooked just as I was squeezing the trigger. I think I’ll have to source some different coloured filters. Whoever said that rabbits can’t see ‘amber’ wasn’t as clued up as he thought he was. 4th bhummer becomes apparent as I turn into the field proper and I hear all sorts of crashing and bashing from the far end. As I follow the hedge down that way I figure it’s a bunch of ‘kids’ on their skateboards. The rabbits are all hiding. 5th bhummer is a real pain in the harris! I come round the bottom of the field and into the gateway of the next field where I have seen loads previously. I’m in full sneaky-sneaky mode, walking like I have terminal piles and some severely dislocated knees. I take ages getting there and make full use of the Sneak-a-peek IR nightsight (but no using the IR lamp as the locals know what comes shortly after that faint red glow comes on). YAY! There is a fine big lad sitting about 15m away. I take a couple of very slow, very carefully placed, still silent, steps to get a view clear of branches. He’s still there! Sneak-a-peak down, do fiddly thing to hang it on the pinky so I can get the finger in the trigger guard. Rifle up, look through the scope and I can just see a dark blob of the dark mess that is the field. Squeeze the remote switch for the lamp and ,,,,,, no light. Squeeze again,,, nowt. Squeeze again,,,,. Rifle down, fiddle with the wiring, rifle up and squeeze the switch,,,,, nowt. Sneak-a-peek back up, he’s still there! More fiddling with the wiring and try again. Yet more disappointment. Decide not to take a pot shot in the dark and stomp off back the way I came, fiddling with the lamp as I go. 6th bhummer. I get back to the gate and retrieve the rifle slip from the bushes. Just as I’m slotting the rifle into the bag my hand brushes the remote lamp switch. ARRRGGGHHHH!!!!! The bloody thing worked! Stomp off home in disgust. Fire up pooter when I get in and but a new remote switch on line. So, no pictures from me for last night!
steve_b_wales
SO, apart from the bhummers, did you have a good night?
Alpha Mule
SO, apart from the bhummers, did you have a good night? Well it didn't rain, the cattle kept their distance, I didn't kneel in any sheep poo, there were no poachers and I didn't slip on any gates/fence hurting the crown jewels, so I suppose it could have been worse. That's a point, I need to tell the farmer about a bit of fence that needs some attention and I spotted a motorbike frame in a stream. Alpha Mule
Well last night was spent with a sharp knife and a soldering iron and my now working again lamp. YAY
weejase
I thought It was just red that rabbits couldn`t see  I swapped my red filter for an amber one the other night at the golf course and the rabbits ran a mile I did read that amber was good for foxes though jase. Frenchieboy
I just got hold of a set of 8 different coloured filters which fit my lamp for less than the price of just a single red filter so am trying different colours. I tried an amber one last night and the rabbits just ignored it and a couple of foxes came running in to it, (shame I only had the .22 with me) but then again the rabbits and foxes on some of my permissions have not been lamped much (As far as I know) so are not "educated" to the lamp yet. If you are interested have a look at: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PACK-8-COLOURED-FILT...=item45eeab6561 With regards to the boots creaking, the kids on skate boards, the cattle in the field, the lamp playing up, etc: you know the old saying don't you: "sheet happens"! Alpha Mule
Went to my other permission last night to try out the red filter I made out of a cheap kids party bowl from Tesco. I was just about to squeeze one off (fnar fnar) when the little lad I had in my sights bolted, then I see a fox wandering straight towards me from further up the bushes. You should have seen him leg it when I growled at him  So I head off up the hedge but without seeing much more for quite a while. Then I clock three sets of eyes on a small rise. There is a nice big fence post right in front of me which I rest the rifle on to get a steady shot. Lamp on, check which rabbit is in the best postition for a shot and,,,, they all leg it. Guess who then wandered right across my 'kill zone'? I have to get a serious caliber rifle capable of doing Charles some seriously fatal damage.

Alpha Mule
Yeehaa! I saw my first live badger tonight. I was just getting to a spot I like and got the sneak-a-peek up for a quick look around and it was about 20 yards off and heading nonchalontly off at about 90 degrees to me. I stood watching it for a couple of minutes, until it went behind a rise and out of sight. I swung around to see if there was anything else about and sure enough a nice big lad was sitting pretty not far off. I'd brought the bipod so decided to get to the top of the small hummock and see how it went. The nice wee chap just sat there waiting - so I obliged :look: I'd only been on the farm for 10 minutes. 1 slug: 1 rabbit (good for me!). I wanderred on a bit and saw a pair shooting off into the distance, then heard the badger snuffling around. I caught sight of him again upwind of me and everything else, so decided to have an early one, get the wee guy into the freezer and open a can. Swings and roundabouts :look:
Beardo
I found these yesterday: Coloured Cellophane 1 Coloured Cellohane 2 Coloured Cellophane 3 i'd watch out with those as they're not heat resistant - you may well end up with a melted mess on your lamp.
