Which electric training collar?

I have done lots of rescearch into the benifits and the downfalls of ellectric training collars and have decided tht in my specific case it would be a usefull tool to develop a well trained and happy dog.

I have a 15 month old lab who will heel, sit on command/whistle/open palm and is generally well behaved.

HIs problem is when he is let off the lead in areas where there are other dogs/people. He is fine if there is no one around and will retrieve happily but as soon as he sees another dog he thinks nothiing of a 500 yard sprint so he can play with the other dog. Nothing I do will stop him i have tried treats, walking off, various commands etc. In his mind another dog is fantastic as he can chase it and be chased.

I know the issue is probably my fault as are most traits in dogs but he was well socalised as a puppy and has never raised his hackles or growled at anything let alone another dog.

I have decided that an electric collar is the best soloution as hopefullly it would enable me to 'snap him out of it' and regain his concentration when he sees another dog.

My question is what collars would people reccomend from personal experience? I have looked at pac, canicom, sportdog etc but could so with some reccomendation.

Please keep comments on how cruel these collars are to yourself as I believe they serve a purpose and fit my need.

I did get sent a DT system one as a sample and have given it a assessment on me and lab its compact ,well made and the remote is very small and on a lanyard, its waterproof (essential on a lab ) and the collar bit is re chargeable..but they don't hold the charge long if un used .figure if you want it for your reason its best on a lanyard so you could get to it easily and time it just when the dog looks like he is going to run out ...on the hoof it may not work as well as you think. ... The Yanks use them far more than us and to good effect in a lot of cases so take a look at some US sites /vids and see what you think...most UK models are US models with a converted charger anyway . It has a vibration mode and about 9 different setting from barely nothing to a fair whack and are alterd from the handset wheel. . plus it times out and shuts down after a few seconds..though that's a long time to shock a dog . The Yanks do use them slightly different to how we think..most try to use it in a positive way..bizarre but it can be done , but read and watch U tube as much as possible as it may not do what you want in the way you think it will ..does that make any scence

Other thing all of them can be very inconsistent dep. on the terrain , on the fit and how wet yours dog is so a mild number 4 may act like a 7 on certain days and a Max setting barley raise a smile on others ....A lot of folk do work a dog with them on but the collars are very strong platic so watch out in cover ...that is a big reserve of mine about there use in the field . Also remember they are banned in Wales ..just in case he runs that far

I have a head strong lab that had a similar vice at that age...and the collar wouldnt do it as a permenant fix in my case (but I only tried for a few days ).... I got round it by pulling out a tennis ball when she saw other dogs ...she soon re focused ..then just sliped it back in my pocket and leashed her with a treat for a minute..then off again ...works when she got to hot on pheasant to ...now she,s older the vice subsided , but she was ball crazy so may not work for you ..good luck anyway

I have an SD-400 from sportdog. Not sure if they are available in this country as mine was brougth from the US. The batteries lasted 4+ years with regular recharging which I think it quite acceptable. Good range, more than enough for a lab in the uplands. Mine is compact, which was a necessity on Roxy as she has a small frame. The transmitter is small also, which is convenient. I'd get another.

Roxy also behaved just like you've mentioned. She was always very fussy with other dogs. She always wants to go play. It got to the point where we didn't want to take her anywhere with us as she'd always be pulling to go meet another dog. She's gotten a lot better about things now and I think it is twofold. First, she has gotten older. She has generally chilled out as she has gotten older. Probably more importantly though, we socialize her more. She goes to the market, she goes to the park, etc. A fenced in dog park is great as you can let them run and play. Now, seeing new dogs isn't anything new for her unless she's been cooped up in the house for a week. Even then, after meeting or playing with a few she's back to good. Now we can walk through the park, off lead, and he doesn't take after every dog out there. You can see she wants to, and she looks back for permission, but if you tell her to heel she will.

Thanks

Rick

  • 2 weeks later...

Now i think i want the 2000!

Not having seen one in action and as i still need to do a lot of reading up, what soprt of range do i really need?

When magnum sees another dog hes off at 100mph till he gets to it. Really want to curb this behavior asap. My missus wont take him off the lead when she walks him so hes only getting a 30min walk in the morning when givel the loaction he could be off the lead getting much more benifit from a 30 min walk/run.

go for innotek, any of their collars are brilliant. I have a fox hound cross with a ridge back and he was a rescue that was treated really badly. He was always up for a fight and a chewing game, went and got one of these collars, after a few of the shocks and a few of the tone levels which are beeps he knew when the collar was on he was to behave. I then started taking him out in the field with it on and he stayed within a 50 yard range all the time, if he went beyond that i just gave him the tone and he would be straight back. They are around £200 but they are a collar for life with brilliant customer service. The ranges start from 250 yards and go upto a mile in distance. They are fully waterproof.

This is the one we have
