Reload
I went for the first time the other day... What a good time, the ferrets enjoyed themselves too. We only managed to get 4 because there were far too many holes for my 10 nets... I will have to get some more before I get out again. My little jill, seen here with the first 2 didn't seen to tire all morning, however my cob, asleep in the box seemed to lose interest after some work. The warren's are along a hedgerow and difficult to expose without causing too much damage. The hedgerow is about 500 meters long and it's very difficult to identify separate warrens. They all seem to intermingle all the way along. My next attack will be with alot more nets and more ferrets, I think the rabbits gave them the run around below ground. Any tips would be welcome. Hezbear
Well done on the 4 rabbits , try to get hold of a long net for big setts as they might refuse to move if they hear you setting the nets. I take it they are young ferrets with the hob tiring
Aled
I'm no expert at ferreting but i'd say 4 rabbits at your first attempt is very good going. Well done. Cheers Aled
steve0146
I dont really bother with purse nets now and much prefer to longnet but it depends on your ground. A net surrounding the warrens should do the trick or a small net through a gap in the hedge. You can still purse net the easy holes if you wanted, better safe than sorry. Reload
Hezbear, yes they are young, probably unfit too. The long net sounds interesting, I wouldn't know how to use it though. I've just been down the gun shop and bought 10 more nets. Hezbear
They won't be unfit mate just not sure on what they are doing, a few more trips out and they will be working all day long , Long nets or stop nets are good but if you can set them up on flat fields a few times to get used to setting them it will help
Reload
Long nets it is then. 1 thing I noticed, when the rabbits bolted from holes I hadn't netted they ran down the edge of the hedge. So, I'm thinking that if I set a long net across their path and stand up from the burrow to force them in that direction, I'll be onto a winner... Hezbear
If they spot you they will more than likely run in to the next hole, so I would just wait by the purse nets unless I seen one hit the long net
Cookiemonsterandmerlin.
Best thing is a small gate net a couple of days in advance clear a path in the bottom of the hedge for the net to go say ever 10 yards. It is very rare for rabbits to run in the open from hedgerow burrows. Always down the hedge I too have given up with purse net I only use them on the downs. I have one area where they have a large pond with reeds I circle the pond with two 150 yard longnets then beat and flush with the dogs best bag was 32 real fun watching the dogs hunt.
