Stealth Stalker
I haven't been out foxing for a while now, what with one thing & another, & besides Gary & me thought we,d shot them all. Between us on each others ground we've accounted for 90 odd foxes. With Gary disillusioned with shooting them & now going out with long dogs, I was with the local gamekeeper & a few of the farm hands in his newly acquired Frontera sport (lamping wagon). We went out over on my permission & we soon had a pair of eyes looking back at us, this fox was jumpy and was moving away towards the wood, a squeak from the keeper stopped him about 90 yds away& I gently squeezed off the trigger only to see him run into the wood. There was a tell tale thud but I wasn't convinced I'd hit him & a search of the area found nowt We moved into another field and had eyes a long way off, Dean stated calling & foxy was showing some interest still about 600yds away slowly making his way nearer, & quick scan with the lamp (something we always do after prolonged calling) had another fox about 75 yds lying down to our left, this time there was no mistake & the shot between the eyes had fox number 1, a quick scan of the other fox had him running towards where we just shot his mate, it was really windy & the report must have confused him, he stopped briefly to sniff the sleeping fox then legged it towards the wood, a yard away he stopped broadside & I rushed a shot only to see him bound into the cover, **** another miss! I was really pee'd off with my shooting at this point, so we decided to swap round & Dean would shoot over on his ground where there had been 3 foxes seen the day before in the pheasant drives. Straight away we were into a fox at 120 yds & Dean misses with his 22-250, foxys still there behind the hedge so we drive down and he misses a very jumpy fox at about 50 yds he's now running full pelt & I stop him a split second before he leaves the field, this time there's no mistake & he's down. I'm beggining to feel a little better now for my misses. We continue around the estate & this time Dean doesn't make any more mistakes & accounts for another 4 foxes, one lovely shot at 165 yds. So we end the night at 1am with 6 less pheasant thieves. I'm still running my misses around in my head well in to the early hours & decide to get up at dawn and get out with the dogs to try & find them. I cast the dogs off into wood where the first fox dissapeared & straight away Molly my 2 year old lab has found a large dog fox A lot happier I then move on to the other area & she finds fox number 3 Well happy with that My shot placement on the first was a little back & I can only think he moved just before I fired. So all in we had 8 foxes a personal best. Sorry no pics I'd forgot me camera SS

Beardo
that's a fair number indeed, desperate to get some foxing in, but still getting no sleep with the little'un so it'll have to wait a while
al4x
sounds like good sport we're having a dry period not even seen one for the last month, still its almost good not seeing them on shoot days either. Funny how they can run a short way with horrific damage, I've had two one in daylight that went about 10 yards and you could follow the blood trail very easily into the crop and another just made it to a wood and was nigh on impossible to find at night but daylight was easy. Stealth Stalker
I've only had 2 or 3 that have run after the .243 has found its mark, normally they're down without a twitch, thats why I was so pee'd off. (hopefully Gary won't give an account of one such occasion) What it does show is even when you think you've missed its worth a follow up the next morning in daylight. al4x
its especially if you've heard the thud, one of mine was a texas heart shot but it had just exited a partridge pen and wasn't offering a more dignified shot so deserved it
