wildfowler.250
any tips on getting rid of the fat under the skin of a pelt? I've also heard that using a whisked egg rubbed into the skin and then stretching the pelt works for preserving the skin? any ideas if this works/better alternative? (besides giving up ). Tobyb525
If you just want it dried flat just get what you can off and nail it to a board fat side up, and in a few days it will be dry but stiff as a rock. If you want it for a dummy try to skin the rabbits like a sock and put the dummy in it, when it dries it will shrink around it and dry out. If you need it soft though I have no idea about tanning etc
steve_b_wales
Snowdonia Taxidermy Supplies sell a tanning kit that's easy to use. It makes 2 gallons of the chemical, and can be used many times.

steve0146
I'm still using skins that are three years old for dummys, and are as soft as anything. I skinned the rabbit, nailed it to a board fur side down. Scrape the fat and flesh off with a old knife or something similar. I then rub ordinary salt into the skin. Leave it for a week or so and scrape the salt off. The skin will be hard and crispy. The next bit is simple. I just use dubbin that i put on my boots. Rub plenty in and scrunch the skin up to stop it setting hard. My skins are in perfect condition even though they have sat in the shed for 2 or 3 years.
