Dominant Male

Hi,

Hopefully someone can advise me on a problem i have with my Black male retreiver 3 years old. (fully Loaded)!

He is always pushing the domint status (every day)

soon as he is put in his place and punished he is outstanding for the next 5 minutes and as soon as the oppotunity arrives he let's himself down.

Is there some lessons that i can take him through or is it a case of taking him through the 8 week obiediance training.

Thanks for any Tips and advice

what do you mean pushing the dominant status? as in he think's he's boss? with the rotties i used to pin them down when they were pups til they stopped struggling, that way they learnt i was the alpha male (sounds gay but you know what i mean). never had a problem with it after they were 6/7 months old.

never tries it on a 3 yo dog though :look:

I presume that you mean by fully loaded that he is entire? If so, then one option is to have him castrated and you probably suspect that is the case. Another option is to change his diet particularly if he is on more than 22% animal protein. I had an adult police dog that I had to flatten every day to maintain order. Once I reduced his animal protein intake from 26% to 22% he calmed down without it affecting his working ability.

As for taining; try to reinforce your dominance over him by making him sit and wait while you put his meals down. Then allow him to eat at your command. Grooming is also a good way of imposing yourself as his leader.

Subtle seems to work best I figure...not much point fighting him every 5 minutes as it tires you out and he,s getting the attention he wants...look to see what he's doing at home..make sure you make him wait at every door and you go through first then call him through.(if he pushes through shut the door in his face..but don't get to aggressive )..same in the car tell him when to go in..and when to get out ..is he lying in doorways so you have to step over him...if he is move him out of the way till he stops ..lots of little stuff makes a big difference...and get his knackers off cant do any harm either if you aint going to breed or trail him ..its an ongoing battle dominance but you just have to be consistent and never let him off with even the small things you require ...he will keep picking at you but eventually he will get the message ...OK he will never be 100% but he should be more manageable ...pain in the *** this problem..al my dogs have a go at me with it as I,m a bit of a nancy with em at times...but then we draw a line in the sand and things calm down...and although you do feel ****** at them when there at it..having a lighter heart will get you further...dogs read your mood and intention like a big book ..be firm but fair and chat less to when you want him to do something..one command then correction

Good luck buddy

Cheers for your info/advice, have been very firm with him over the last few days especially at feeding times, like calling him to his pen from the other end of the garden, and stopping him 1/2 way and sending him back, he is faultless reacts to the whistle straight away, hopeully this will become a regular response in the field.and not let him get away with any dominance actions.

thanks again guys.
