p-a-s
Right folks pick your brains time again please.Could any members give me there experiences of this cross GWPxGSP please,i know at the end of the day theyre mongrels, but do they make a good HPR,or would it be better to go for the pure breed. neither sire or dam have ever worked and they are from irish lines and the pups are 10 weeks old thanks in advance.paul Edited December 22, 2009 by p-a-s
al4x
no reason why they shouldn't work ok but you won't know what it will look like till a few months old, so were you after a wire haired dog you might not get one. Similar dogs in nature with the GWP being a bit calmer and slightly more sensible. I'd stick it out for a pure wire but I just have a soft spot for them
p-a-s
Thanks al,the litter is already showing a mix of short hair and wire so it might be a bit of a pointer providing as the pups mature the coat doesent change,i was thinking of one as a rough bushing dog to pair up with my lurcher plus a bit of pigeon retrieving
al4x
they are very interesting to work with another dog, odds are it'll point fine. Bushing wise they are quite likely to just point at the bush in question rather than get too involved with it which obviously lets you get closer, but they tend to work at a slower pace than a spaniel etc retrieving you have to work on and mine is ok but not fantastic. Fine on pheasants and her party trick is with foxes and I have had her jump into the back of the pickup with one One thing to watch for is they can vary in size a lot, my bitch is quite a small GWP which suits me well I have met some that were huge and when entire dogs completely a law unto themselves so watch a little what you buy. Certainly the last one I met I didn't believe it was one when stood next to mine and its owners obviously hadn't worked out it would get quite so big
Dirty Harry
I would wait for a pure gwp or gsp if I were you and I would also get one from working lines. I think it increases the chances of getting a dog that will work. I would be gutted if I got a dog and after a year realised that the dog was not up to it. I have a 16 month old GWP who is comming on ok for me and would really recomend one. Piper
