pigeon controller
DB and I were called out to a thirty acre rape field which was being hammered by approx one hundred and fifty birds. the snow had cleared from the field and we walked the birds off at 09.00. We set up with our backs to the wind half way down the edge of the field. When we were setting up birds were trying to come into the set up before we had set the rotary up and we thought we were in for a mega day. Both in the hide, coffee poured and waited for the first bird in, we normally do not shoot the first one in just to see what the reaction is to the set up, no problems straight in and on the deck. I popped up over the hide and shot it going away. We noticed that some of the flock had roosted in some trees on another field and if we left them they would pull other birds to them so I left the hide and proceeded to walk the field and get behind them , which I did . I could hear DB having a good number of shots and when I returned to the hide DB was complaining that they were all turning away before being in range. We stopped the rotary, put grass on the hide, walked out onto the field and looked back at the set up and the hide, all seemed normal but they remained spooky all day and we picked up 88. We wondered if they were migrating birds with the snow up north and were more used to decoys than normal???

neilthepiker1
Hi, they are probably the spooky ones I was trying to shoot the other day. They must have moved down country as I was out this morning and saw only a couple of hundred on my patch, when the other day there must have been a couple of thousand in the area. Very interesting all the same. Regards Neil.
