Mr_Logic
Got nothing to lose by asking, so definitely worth it.
pandamonia
the high velocity and balistic tip of the 17hmr is almost impossible to make it bounce off anything at all, it breaks apart even when hitting paper targets. today we were bouncing 22lr off a frozen lake, even hit a brick once and that pinged off somewhere very loud noise. - lucky i have a perm like a canyon though and nothing is about but trees and fields. with practice you can reduce the pings to a minimum, in the winter the grass will suck the bullet with some mud, the summer hard ground might not but then again how often does the ground go hard in the UK! "almost impossible" It's all relative...I have had 3 or 4, HMR 17g V-Max "bounce" on me in the last couple of years!! Every round is capable of "Bouncing"............ and there is very little I couldn't make bounce off a frozen lake every time!! No arguement that .22lr is somewhat more prone to ricochet than other rounds, and it isn't fun. Everyone should be aware of this possibility, but I think the problem is blown up too much, and .22lr remains the most popular civil calibre in the world so it can't be all bad!!
adam1
back on subject, perhaps you could go cap in hand to the farmer/landowner of the "backstop" who knows, you may even get more land out of it if it goes well The flood bank ( and flood plains beyond) belongs to the waterways agency so unfortunatley will remain an out of bounds area . Great shame as it holds every thing you'd ever want to shoot
