Hunter2
Need some help from you in the know? I thought that having a floated barrel aids for better accuracy If this is true then I seek advice on floating a Howa 1500 sporter barrel .223 It has a laminated stock. I have a wildcat moderator and it seems heavy So the question is How to float the barrel,or does it not matter! Regards Hunter2
seeker
the Howa I had in a laminate stock was ,free floating, ... have you tried the £20 note test? Here's a reasonable article to explain it ... but I'm not sure if there's an absolute answer for every rifle set up.

Billy.
Take the stock off, paint some oil on the gun and put it back on the stock. Remove it again and wipe all the oil off the gun. You'll see on the stock where the gun is touching. - these areas will need extra work, so pencil in those bits. Get some sandpaper and rub all the area that's below the barrel and obviously don't go past the end of the breech, as it'll be of no benefit. You should be able to slide a £5 note between the barrel and stock (not a wedge of them, just one) which will tell you that you've done it right. However, you will need to seal the area that you've sanded, so make sure you've taken enough off the stock to account for the layer of varnish and make sure it's dry when you put it all back together, or you might have some difficulty parting them. Anyway, the final thing is to make sure that when you're shooting the rifle, you don't put your fingers across the barrel, as that can be enough to change the flight of the bullet, so all the effort in floating the barrel will be wasted. I've done this with all my rifles and it literally takes about 30 mins a gun. Good luck Edited January 25, 2010 by harfordwmj
