topguns
I had blow back past the bolt into my face whilst shooting at a target. The loads where well below the maximum granes of powder. 243 win 58granes hornaby bullet head with 40granes of powder. How did the blast get past the shoulder of the case down the side of the bolt and blast me in the face. p.s this was not me, asking question for a friend. Harnser
You were very lucky not to have recieved serious injury . Probable cause is pierced primer , split case ,or very high pressure . Harnser .
Vince Green
Or oddly enought it can happen with very low pressure and a lack of case obtuaration, since you sound to have been uninjured I would suspect the latter. You do not say what powder you were using or if any other unusual circumstances were noted. Was the primer pierced? Was the bolt easy to open and the case easy to extract? Were the cases streaked in soot? If the primer was pierced it was high pressure or a weak primer, if the others were true then maybe low pressure. Has this handload been tested before, was this a one off, are you an experienced handloader or a novice? More info needed really for a full diagnosis. If the primer is unpierced, a photo would be useful but at the end of the day, an experienced handloader on hand would be your best bet. The low pressure blowbacks used to happen from time to time with those Portugese cartridges they were selling a while back. Was the case all black and sooty?
