jonnyoftheboy
a neighbour has come to me with 2 very old side by side shotguns.... seems to think they were his grandfathers, then passed on to his father, then when dad passed away are now his. has them on an SGC, but never used, taken apart, or anything. both in pretty decent condition for their age. one is a 28" barrelled sxs, says made by Gray & Co of inverness other is a 29 & 1/2" barrelled sxs, says made by A. Charpu of Paris. (this could be one of a pair? as has a no. 1 engraved on top of action in front of top lever?) can anyone help in finding out how to date? any history? point me in right direction....? neighbour wants to know if they are of any value/collectible. any help / pointers gratefully received Jon Charpu of Paris sxs: Edited January 30, 2010 by jonnyoftheboy

mudpatten
I don`t know of any French maker called Charpu. However, there is an Armee Charpuis. Is it possible that the last few letters of the name have been obscured? Charpuis are still in business and have a web site. A quick email with the serial number should give some information. I`ve seen a number of Charpuis guns over the years. Although they come in a variety of grades they are generally well made and have an excellent reputation in France.
