fortune82
I decided to do a bit of roost shooting this afternoon with the .410 and some 2.5" no.6 cartridges. I had shot 3 birds when I was suddenly confronted by a fox walking past about 20 yards away. I did not fire because I only had the .410 but it got me thinking would it do the job or not? The gun has no choke in either barrel. In the end I got 7 pigeon for 10 shots which I dont think is bad for roosting!
SSS
Good shooting, and to be honest, you did the same as I would have done. .410 is capable of killing foxes, but not at range. Not too bad in a cage trap
CZ550Kevlar
I wouldn`t try it, foxes are pretty tough and at distance there just isn`t going to be the stopping power, chances are you would have only just flesh wounded it. Good for you not taking the shot.
fortune82
Out of interets if I had the 12 bore with 30 gram no.6 or 7 do you think that would have had sufficient stopping power at 20 yards? Ive only ever shot them with 42 gram no.3 on fox drives.
SSS
at 20 yards, 12 bore with 30 or 32 gram 6's will do it, mind you, I shot one earlier close range with 36 gram number 1's and it took 3 shots.
fortune82
Theyre tough. I ve had them run 50 odd metres or more with 42 gram no.3 in the neck and chest through a full choke at 30 yards
Dekers
It's all about shot placement with ANY shotgun, and by that I mean "SHOT" placement, it doesnt matter how good you are, the pattern is predictable but the specific shot placement isn't! Get it right (lucky) with a 410 and 20 yards is perfectly doable, a 12 with the right cartridge is more capable, but you are still down to the unpredictable specific shot placement. As has been said, best to generally forget 410 unless for despatch, and keep 12 as close as possible with a sensibly large and heavy load!!
