harrycatcat1
What sort of job is it to change the seals in my 1985/6 Range Rover power steering pump. What its doing is losing all the fluid when I fill it up, makes a right noise when turning left and right. Funny enough though turning left is a lot easier than turning right. So I thought if I changed the seals it might cure the problem. What do you think?

harrycatcat1
is it the one with a tin seperate resovoir? I have a one you could have for a tenner The resevoir on mine ( I am not a mechanic) is black with a black plastic top. The reason I was asking the question though is the seals at Paddock are only a couple of quid but I will keep your offer in mind thank you very much if I fail on the seal front. What do you think? do you mean the steering box? , if so it is probably knackered a reconditioned one will cost you about £170 but you will get half of that back if you give them your old one I have had several old rangeys and discoverys and changing the bottom seal on the output shaft never works as it is play in the box that causes the problem. miniwizard
if its the pump with the tin cover over it that acts as a res. be caerfull you dont bend it getting it separated from the pump, there should be a large o ring around the pump and a a rubber washer between the pump housing and the res at the rear where the bolt holds it together. I use black silicone instead of the large o ring and let it set overnight, making sure that its clean of any oil before putting the silicon on. The reason why most of these kind leak it people use pry bars on the to tighten the belt and crush the tin,if this has happened to yours you will never get it to seal unless you go the silicon route, and dont run it when the pump is making noise as you will ruin it and even if you get oil to stay in it you will allways have the noise.. miniwizard
thats a ZF pump, not what i was talking of,but there is only one oil (lip) seal on it behind the pulley, dont think you need a puller for the pulley and thats only if its leaking at the front. crazyfarmerboy
basically it is worth re sealing if it is working well, but if as you say at the top it i giving you issues turning or not acting as it should there is no point re sealing it, may as well go for a recon which is guess are couple or hundred, or buy a 2nd hand one, should be able to pick one up on ebay for not too much
