Dan73
Hi All, Been thinking about this on and off for a few years now, but have decided that it should only take 3 or 4 days so I'm going to have a crack in the coming weeks. Just wondering if anyone here had any experience of building one? maybe some hints and tips? I've found a few decent websites with free plans and a few with blogs from people who have built their own. I'm looking to build something for me, one of my sons, and possibly the dog, short trips, perhaps holding a tent and overnight kit. Cheers all Dan73
Magus69
Selway Fisher Prospector is what you need.It is easy to build, paddles beautifully, will easily carry 2 adults the dog and a weeks worth of camping gear,. If you haven't found them already look at Song Of The Paddle,Black Sheep Paddlers, and Canoe With a View, forums. Black Sheep Paddlers are having a big meet the end of April at Coniston and Becky Mason the daughter of the great canoeing guru Bill Mason will be attending. You don't need a canoe to attend just turn up and introduce yourself.Hopefully me and my brother will be making it so look for the Choccie Labs or ask to be pointed in the direction of the "brothers B". John_R
I have built a few boats, though never yet done stitch-and-glue. I will do so one of these days. I have seen folk use cable ties, or cheap wire to do the stitching. I would certainly say to only use epoxy resin when you come to glassing the seams. Never use polyester/car body products. Sounds like you already know the web sites to read, so go for it and have fun!
webber
I'm not exactly certain what you mean by stitch and glue; but I recall many years ago when I was in the Scouts we built a twin seater kyak. It was made from marine plywood, and stitched together with copper wire. The joints were then sealed with resin and fibreglass tape. It was great and lasted many years. I recall launching it on the same day that the Americans landed on the moon, and naming the craft Eagle. The event was featured in our local newspaper. webber
