Kudu
I have a '96 1.7i Niva a the bottom of the garden. The 4x4 wasn't mine, while everything works fine the gearbox has a loud whine in all gears. Does anybody have any ideas, wondering what to do with it, wheather to sell, scrap or repair. Paul223
Check the gear box, transfer box, and axle oil levels first, what's it like other than the whine, tidy or tatty?
Kudu
Check the gear box, transfer box, and axle oil levels first, what's it like other than the whine, tidy or tatty? Oil levels fine, It's a constant speed related whine. Sounds like a failed bearing somewhere.

If the whine changes when clutch is pressed it may be as simple as the release bearing

Paul223
does the whine relate to road or speed engine speed?
