Bloke
Taught twice - first by the friend who took me vermin shooting with his spare gun 30 years ago. Second time was a few years later when, as a community nurse, I was visiting an elderly farmer who suffered with Alzheimers disease. Halfway through interviewing his wife, he came into the room with a S/S 12-bore pointed straight at me, with his finger on the triggers and ordered me out of the house - (needless to say, I agreed, brown trousers and all !) His wife rang me later to say the gun wasn't loaded and although they had removed all his guns some years earlier, he must have had this one hidden ! The family had already taken the gun to the police for destruction (pity), but when you have stared down double barrels you think are loaded, you really don't tend to forget gun safety ! Gunny
First taught by my Father who would not even let me point a cap gun at anyone. He spent 30 years in the Army repairing guns and had been called as an expert witness at many courts of inquiry where someone had been hurt. Later in life I followed in my Father's footsteps and safety was always emphasized during my training - trouble is that some people are incapable of listening and understanding and I can now see where my Dad was coming from. The first thing I automatically do when picking up any gun is to check if it is safe. There has been plenty of times when, having been told it was unloaded, I have opened the breech and ejected a live round.
