FAC application questions.

Recommended Posts

Hi about to apply for a FAC cert just wondered about ammo safes, I have two gun cabinets one for my shotguns and the other for my Air rifles, can i use the air rifle cabinet as an ammo store (theres plenty of space)and the other question is My wife is a SGC holder and shares my cabinet and guns, would the FEO allow rim fires etc to be stored in the shotgun cabinet and my wife not knowing where the keys are? this would not be a problem as we always go shooting together.

Just though i would ask on here first before asking my FEO.

The guns i'm asking for are .22 bolt action,.22 semi, .38 underlever, and ..44 black powder pistol, as i will be buying one at a time when buget allows will the slots on ticket be open or do you have as FEO to open them when gun is bought hope that made sense oh and this is for targets only if that makes any difference.

just got to wait until probationary period is up.

Cheers Vulture

Hi Vulture why not just ask for .22rf * 2 then you are not commited to the mechanism of the rifle.........as for your .38 underlever...... you could ask for .38/.357 centerfire.....hope this might save you some time with your application

If you are the only person in the house with an FAC then you are the only person who should have access to any of the cabinets. As long as your blot and ammo for the FAC firearms is in a different locked cabinet, they shouldn't mind what else is in there but your best bet by far is to call your local firearms office and ask them, whenever I've got stuck or had conflicting advice, I've called them up and they've always been very happy to help.

Depending on your experience and your reasons for owning four firearms on your first ticket, you might not get all four slots on your first go. Adjusting your ticket costs usually around £25, not much extra onto the price of a .30 or a black powder pistol.

It all depends on the discretion of your FEO though, there are no hard an fast rules about this, just guidelines.

Good luck!

If you're applying for target use then the gun will be cleared for approved ranges so yes in effect it's open, although for target there isn't a closed ticket as such. You would be allowed to shoot them at your own club and other ranges (if you were taking part in a competition for example)

As far as the cabinet you'd need to ask your FEO as it's a bit marginal, if another person has access to the cabinet then all the guns in that cabinet need to be on both people's licences, not sure how they would view it if you told them that your wife owns shotguns that she doesn't have access to.

Might be easier to keep the Section 1's in the Air Rifle safe and just buy a separate ammo safe

I think an Open ticket usually means you can shoot the rifle anywhere where you feel it is safe that has sufficient land to allow you to legally discharge a firearm. I know people with closed tickets that have .38 for target shooting at any approved ranges, that does not mean it's an open ticket.

Having said that, you said "in effect" it's open so as long as you're always shooting at an approved shooting range, I guess you could call it an "open target licence" but I've never seen a FAC with target slots that are restricted to certain ranges so I guess all target slots are "open target slots"

Target slots you can shoot at any approved range but you can't take that .38 underlever out to your mate's back garden, nor can you take it out to the farm for shooting vermin. Every gun can only be used for the purpose it's been granted for (sighting in game rifles at ranges is ok though)

Dont apply for just 38-put down on the form 38/357 then you have the option to choose what ammo to buy.

Ammo safe wise,i bought this Brattonsound one.I've just been granted my FAC and because i wanted large calibres (7.62x54,7.92x57 & 38/357-to get me started) i needed a larger safe because im allowed 600 of each calibre and need to secure them in principal-even if i dont go upto my limit all at same time.
