Shotgun info please

I am hoping some kind person could tell me more about my shotgun 12b 28''.

 

I have searched for 'The Modern Arms Co. Ltd London' and found nothing. The gun is in pretty good condition, lovely wood, action is tight and shoots well too. I'd simply like to know more about it, age ect and what it is worth.

Hi,

Nice and if it's tight, it deserves the TLC it needs. Barrels re-blued, chequering re-cut and the wood sorted. It wouldn't cost a fortune and would enhance the value both aesthetically and in monetary terms although the latter is not going to be great.

The server still isnt working, but I will keep trying. From what I can remember I had a Modern arms co. 410. It was from 1929. They only traded for a very short period under that name. I'll be in touch as soon as..

It is pretty tight and is a good looking old thing I think. I plan to tidy it up. The wood is pretty good only a few minor things to do, the chequering is actually pretty good too just grime not worn. The acition has some tarnish to it and the barrells are not too bad (the bore is good too).

 

Any tips on sorting it out myself?

You should be able to date it from the proof mark in the top LEFT of the photo, try contacting the London proof house (if it has london marks) search for "shotgun proof marks" and a few related terms there is alot you can tell from the proof date, location and on some guns/proof houses you can pay for a detailed search of the archives (more info on date who proofed it etc)

To me the proof marks look like Birmingham post 1904 pre 1954 The one in the top left will hold the date
