rabbitstopper Posted August 30, 2002 Report Share Posted August 30, 2002 As i have a semi auto i only have the option of one choke at a time, When i first started pigeon shooting i was using 1/4 choke and was getting all of the 15-35yarders, but anything further i was just taking feathers and rarely downing a bird. So then i decided to switch to 1/2 now i can hit anything under 25yards and when i do it completely destoys the bird leaving none for the pot, but now i can take birds easily out to 45-55yards now with normally very clean kills and also rarely messy. So i'm woundering to got the long range kills and use my 1/2 or use my 1/4 and just concentrate on my closer birds. (shame i havent got a 3/8 in my set, if anyone knows that mossberg make 3/8 chokes please post). James Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Cranfield Posted August 30, 2002 Report Share Posted August 30, 2002 I rarely use anything above 30gm No 6 and occassionally I use a 28gm load. When decoying most of the birds are going to be inside 35 yards. That is quite a long way away when you pace it out. I would be satisfied with a quarter choke for decoys. Or stay with the half choke and drop your load down a notch or two and see how you get on. A lot of people ignore the relationship between shot size, load weight and choke. Cranfield Posted August 30, 2002 Report Share Posted August 30, 2002 I think if you drop down to 30gms you won,t miss any more birds than usual when you are using half choke. 28gms (1 ounce) is the load favoured by some of the high pheasant specialists, fired through three quarter chokes though.
