BountyHunter
As it says on the tin, if I were to go for a 97k is .22 or .177 best for Rabbit? (I do like to topple the occasional Crow, Woodie and or Maggie as well) BH
old rooster
Lot of posts on this, it's a trade off of trajectory really, I always prefer the .22 personally but I'm an old *** so you shouldn't take any notice of what I say. Quite the contrary mate - I believe experience counts above everything else. Thanks for the input. BH
The Shootist
I find .22 a bit too 'lobby' for me I'd say go with a .177 or my personal favourite .20 I've got a .20 calibre 97k It's deadly accurate... 10 ~ 15 mm groups at 30 metres with H&N FTT's. Probably taken more rabbits and pigeons with this rifle than any other. Ideal hunting calibre.. Shot an HFT comp with it for a laugh at the weekend. I usually use a .177 pcp for HFT but took the .20 cal springer for a change... Scored 54x60 and won the sprnger class medal... Overall it placed me 6th beating many a Daystate MkIII and the likes ! Great rifle, you wont regret getting one... Regards Tony
Axe
It was simple for me, .177 is just far to fiddley for my fingers!
BountyHunter
I have girly hands so that isn't an issue :*) I do like the idea of a compromise though hmm .20... BH
SNAKEBITE
As it says on the tin, if I were to go for a 97k is .22 or .177 best for Rabbit? Popcorn, get your popcorn here! Looks like we are in for the long haul here If ever there was a question to provoke an arguement then this is it Unfortuantly you are not going to get a clear answer on this one. To be honest they are both as good as each other but in different ways. You have to choose one and stick with it and learn the trajectories of each one. However I am a firm believer that .177 is a girls only calibre (the noise you hear is me retiring to the shelter with my tin hat on)

BountyHunter
So .177 is a girlie calibre for girls and you need girlie hands to load it? That settles it then, it's manly .22 for me all the way Grrrrrr I am so rugged! BH

roblade
if it were a new member turning up at the club asking what calibre would be best, i would recomend .177 (.22 is sooooo last year dearie ), it flies flatter and faster which means its more frogiving on range estimations. ROB PS dont forget 12F/lbs is 12 F/lbs in .177 or .22 but the velocity is about 1/3 more in .

SNAKEBITE
Hmm obviously you don't get to Cornwall very often. Isn't that where they filmed the "Wicker Man"? If so then you can't blame me really can you? Only joking, I know things can be a bit further afield down that way but where is your nearest club? BountyHunter
It's not the wicker man you want to be scared of but the locals... I think there is a rifle club in Penzance which is about 30 miles from me, there is one at Culdrose as well but that is a special club for Navy personell so they won't let me play. I am sure if I looked hard enough I could find somewhere. BH
lord_seagrave
I too have an HW97K in .20 calibre. There is a fractional dip with the heavier pellets (Penetrators) but with my usual choice (H&N FTTs) it's very forgiving if I haven't judged the range entirely correctly. I would definitely recommend it. Regards, LS
