RogerH
Quick question as I know next to nothing about airguns. I'm toying with the idea of taking one to my place in France for small vermin. Having looked into it there is a 10 Joule limit on such weapons over there without a permit, so I wonder if it would be a waste of time for anything bigger than a rat at close quarters, say? (Not interested in targets only). What does 10 Joules equate to over here and is there any point at all in getting one? What do you guys think? Thanks for any advice... bullet boy
I'm not sure if you can use Air-Rifles in France?I might be wrong though?
RogerH
Think you can but limited to 10 Joules only...?
john2
I think the limit over there is 6 foot pounds where we have a limit of 12 foot pounds non FAC of course
RogerH
Thanks John, so 6 ft/lb is equivalent to 10 Joules. Is a 6 ft/lb air rifle worth having or not? I haven't a clue but it doesn't sound promising...
maverick123
i wouldnt shoot rabbits with a 6ftlb air gun, just my opinion. i too believed air guns were a no in france?!
RogerH
You can definitely have them up to 10 Joules according to the French government website. I did some more Googling and it seems that nobody recommends anything much less than UK max <12 ft/lb for even rats and certainly not rabbits etc. I think that at 6 ft/lb, targets only at max 10 metres seems to be the general advice. So I answered my own question I think! Thanks chaps... Roger

It's easy to get a license for .22 cartridge so it's not an issue. Actually it is much harder than UK in that you have to pass an exam on quarry and their breeding habits etc., also a safety practical (not a bad thing) in French, even to be able to hunt on your own land. Rabbits etc can only be shot in season, and about the only things you can take out of season are corvids, pigeons and rats etc. This relates to a hunting license only and applies equally to shotguns or rifles. For target shooting you need to be a member of a club to obtain the equivalent of a FAC as over here. I'll just stick to my shotgun as I can use it over there on my European Firearms Pass - with permission of course. Also BASC provided a free French translation of proof of insurance which keeps everyone happy. Cheers Roger

mick miller
What's the law on using catapults? If it's okay you could make yourself one of these.
