njc110381
My variation finally came in yesterday so I was off to the gun shop to pick up my new but used CZ550 .243. The rifle looks like it's done very little work and apart from the moderator ring on the barrel, has no marks at all. The blueing on the bolt **** etc is perfect so I'd say it's not had a busy life. I've not fired it yet but already I'm wondering if the old owner may have traded it in because it didn't shoot? Reason for saying that is it's very tight on the woodwork at the front of the stock and is well and truely not free floating there! I'll shoot it to find out but I think it may be time to do the CZ thing with the piece of pipe and sandpaper! It seems a great number of them have this trouble and it's a great way to pick up a "non shooter" with avery probable easy fix. I picked up 40 rounds of Hornady 75grn HP with it as it's going to be a Fox gun really. I'm told that they hold together well enough for Deer too at a push, although neck shots would be ideal? I think I'm getting to the point now that once I know the gun a bit better I'll be happy enough to take on that sort of shot if the conditions are right. I've fitted the rifle with my Bushnell Elite 5-15x50 and the Wildcat mod. It seems quite nice so I'll be off out to test and zero it later. I'll post a pic of the rifle and group if I get chance. I take head and neck shots when ever I can, puts them straight down, I just feel much more comfortable this way Good luck with the new gun
wy111
Had a CZ 550 American in .243 for a few years now and would not swap it for anything, even though it has non-standard dovetails. It is sweet with 70gn Nostler bt's or Speer tnt's, very flat shooting out to 250yds+. 100gn Speer btsp's will take out any deer, no problem. The only thing I had to do, was rebed the recoil lug as there were only a couple of blobs of accriglass. As I only used some cheepo "magic metal" to do it, this year gonna do a full rebedding with Devcon. Dave
Dekers
Don't start looking for problems and don't get set on any ammo or type of shot placement yet....keep an open mind and try the thing!! The rifle will tell you if it has a problem and what ammo it likes..... and situation/experience/ability/confidence will tell you where to put the shot! Bazooka Joe
I've not fired it yet but already I'm wondering if the old owner may have traded it in because it didn't shoot? Reason for saying that is it's very tight on the woodwork at the front of the stock and is well and truely not free floating there! Hi Nic, we've had 3 CZ's, & everyone of them I've had to float the barrel...you'll soon find out when you put it on paper. Also check if you put a bipod on that the barrels floating when fitted, it's easy to modify the stock, just do it yourself with a wooden dowel & sand paper. I'm sure your CZ is 1-10 twist, & the 75's should be OK...I'm using Vmax in 75, & 87g in my 75 Sako, homeloaded, (which you should consider) & find they are the best weight for the twist, but try them all, you never know your CZ might prefer different, BJ. njc110381
I know what you're saying Dekers. I'll certainly not fix it if it isn't broken but I'm trying to look for reasons why the last owner sold it? I'm told he upgraded to a Sauer so perhaps he just wanted something a little more posh? It does look very tight in the stock though so I'm preparing to have trouble with the bipod. I've just bought 40 rounds of Hornady so I hope it works. If not I'll send them off down the range and use the cases to work up a home load. I load for all my centrefires but like to start off with a couple of boxes of factory to get the brass. I've not got any dies yet though so it would be nice if the factory ammo shot well. If anyone has a used set of .243 dies let me know and I'll take them off your hands! njc110381
talking of dies........ I've had a really busy week, sorry! I've pulled quite a few rounds but have a few more to go. I need to get to the post office to send my latest purchase letter in to the police so I'll make sure they're done by then. You'll have them by the end of the week
