Buying used .17 HMR

It's pretty difficult to burn out a .17HMR barrel, so I wouldn't be worried.

The general condition of the rifle will show you how well or badly it's been handled. Look for deep scratches and marks on the barrel.

Other than that, just ask to shoot 10 rounds before you buy.

Edit: also check the empty cases coming out of the rifle. If any are split, you may be buying a gun which has had its breech cut too wide (we're talking micrometers wrong!)

Thanks. I suspect high street gun shops might not be able to let me take a few shots. I say that as I have seen a HW60j on someone's list!

Some shops actually will let you shoot 'out the back of the shop' or they may also have a local range.

However, if you're buying from a shop, you are covered under a guarantee that they can't sell faulty goods.

split cases are a big matter for debate some guns seem to do it some don't, it doesn't seem to affect accuracy or safety so really isn't much of an issue. Personally I'd look on here first as so many come up for sale that haven't done much work at all
