oscarsdad
Hi guys, I need some advice. My border has just turned one and up until last week he would go to a friends in the day whilst I was at work and play with their lab who is his best mate. As of last friday he cannot go there anymore as he has chewed too much furniture! I need to stop him chewing because at the moment he is having to stay at home on his own all day which is not ideal and I dont like doing. He was on his own today for the first time, my neighbour said he howled a bit this morning but he has not chewed anything! He doesnt tend to chew at home anymore, he did, but he doesnt anymore. I dont know how to make sure he wont chew at the friends house so that he can go back to be with his mate in the day. It cant be separation anxiety because he is not on his own when he chews and he no longer chews when he is home alone. He was crate trained up until six months but now he sleeps on his bed and I dont use the crate anymore. Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thanks, Anthony
pegleg31
maybe he prefers the taste of your mate's furniture?
oscarsdad
maybe he prefers the taste of your mate's furniture? hmmm maybe...he actually thinks he is a lab...his best mate is a fox red bitch who looks just like yours...I have a little suspicion it is actually her chewing as she is only young too and my border is being blamed! Did yours chew anything?
steve0146
it could be anxiety. He may be missing you, even if he has company. Try buying a kong and filling it with tasty treats like soft spread cheese or hotdogs. It keeps ours amused for ages.
rickyspringer
get the dog back in the crate, or set up a day run whilst you are at work, agree it could be anxiety and a bone or kong will help, also think it could be the lab, I would personally get him used to the crate at home again, to see if the chewing persists at your friends with the lab
oscarsdad
Whenever I leave him at home I always leave him a treat filled kong to keep him amused... He was at home yesterday but not in his crate - he didn't chew anything but my neighbour said he was howling in the morning. He is now in the car in his crate at work so I will go and walk him round the block every couple of hours or so...not ideal but at least he sees me more frequently. He is asleep and doesn't really get stressed left in the car in the crate-I am lucky it is not too hot though as I can't leave him in there in hot weather. I know this is not ideal for him, when I got him I wasn't single & my girlfriend would have him all day at the yard with her horses - but I cannot bring myself to find him a new home :-( I need to pursuade work to let him have a bed in the corner of my office then I have not problem!
