shooting charley
Just wondering if anyone has had this problem and how did they solve it? I have a Ruger Target Varmint in .204 it appears that it has a built in bullet jump? as when i put the OAL gage in and push the bullet in to get a setting the bullet just falls out of the end of the case it will not reach the lands ??, Has anyone had this and how did they get round it. njc110381
Being a heavy target barrel is there any chance it may be throated for heavier bullets? If you're using really light ones this can sometimes be an issue because they're not as long. Perhaps try a heavier bullet? seeker
To get the length try using your cleaning rod .... mark the muzzle to bolt face length then drop a bullet into the rifling. Slowly push the rod in til it touches the bullet tip. Gap is your max OAL to seat at rifling ... a bit fiddly but it works. Then you can get an idea of how to solve the rest of the problem! kent
Factory made guns make it intentionally difficult to jamb fit a bullet to the launds as it increases presure. They work on the longest col to SAMMI and give clearance on that length. Don't fret just get the best jumped load

seeker
Even Factory guns have to conform to SAAMI / CIP measurements or should fail proof . And in mass production a manufacturer would choose to set things between the tolerances to avoid rejecting an item ... yes??? In rifles the tolerances are there but they are measured in 0.001"s and 0.0001"s ... not whole bullet lengths.!! IIRC, headspace can differ a whole 0.010" from min to max and a barrel bore +0.0002/ - 0.
