camel
hi all, would really appreciate some advice re: target shooting... 1. Is it essential to use a heavy TR barrell [as in Ruger 10/22] for target shooting? 2. I like the look of the walther G22 - will it make a good range gun? 3. How about the standard Ruger 10/22? does that make a good target gun? Many thanks in advance!
lasbrisas
Ok this is my personal view but will not be everyones but I have gone down this route recently. If your shooting comps then I would say you need something light as between each target exposure you have to lower the rifle to 45 degrees. Believe me after a while with a heavy rifle your arm will ache. Second point is you want something that cycles reliably, my rifle is custom made with a light barrel etc, infact there are no ruger parts on it. Also keep your mags clean, theres nothing worse than a dropped shot. if you can combine weight, accuracy and reliability then your onto a winner. PS. a chap at my club had a G22 which was always jamming, no wonder he traded it in for something else. tony-devon
as a gallery rifle shooter I would agree mine was as light as could be, 100% reliable, (I managed to count back a documented 14k rounds without a jam) and very accurate but that came at a cost, my 10-22, of which theres not one single ruger bit, would set you back in the region of £1300 now, add in the scope, mounts, mover mount, barricade wings, minimum 8 magazines, and your at £2k you can add weight cheaply. if I was to build another one now, I would go for a kidd 12.5" barrel, accurate, good quality, cheap, and in my opinion, its got the weight/balance issue just right when in a majority of stocks I had a boyds barracuda, but its a bit sort in the forend for some that like to grip well forward, however it suits me. camel
thanks Tony and lasbrisas..... this is just the kind of info i am after - at my club, 'the' .22 to have is a ruger 10-22 with a bloody heavy barrell.......all right for a couple of 15-min details, but surely not for long can I also ask for advice on makes/brands? pics? at this stage i think I will go for a off-the-shelf one, 2k after this recession is over
Dekers
How serious do you want to get?? You can do perfectly well with a 10/22 or CZ 452, have great fun and enjoy yourself? Anschutz are excellent in my view for off the shelf work, and may gain you an extra millimeter or two, there are others of course. Heavy barrels and aches are what it is about, it gets hard work the higher up the tree you climb, practice and exercise helps, but I can remember virtually collapsing with exhaustion in the past after comps. It's mental and physical, and I was never up to the class of some! Don't forget to spent time finding the right ammo too!

tony-devon
nice spec build, tactical innovations receiver, kidd, bolt, bolt handle and buffer, kidd trigger with speed release, and kidd barrel 12.5" in a boyds evo pepper stock that will get the job done

tony-devon
not too bad getting the hang of it whats the sizes of them target rings?
the running man
Well,I'm not sure,u can see the .22 holes so just go off that,I think the 10 ring aint far off a 5p but,if u clip the 10 line in the 9 itl count as 10,as its inward scoring! As opposed to bench rest or prone target rifle. U shoot 2 of these cards per round,10 rounds per season. So out of 200 each round my average is 186.9 which is only 3rd best at my club, our top shot is 193.5 average! Not easy!
tony-devon
LOL was just winding you up mate, tis good shooting, was wondering about the target rings as I never shot targets like that, only ever gallery rifle targets. and at 25m are the other high scorers shooting 10-22's, or more bespoke target rifles?
