Gemmaahh
Just bought a new dog today, he is a 4 year old springer. Need some advice on training him. He pulls on the lead like crazy , doesn't sit on command etc Is the saying right that you can't teach an old dog new tricks!? My ultimate goal is for him to walk anywhere off the lead and to walk at my side. Please help me. Thank you.
chefy
i know someone who rescued a springer at 6 years old he had had some fist so was very timid,he couldnt do anything but after 12 months hes picking up at shoots and loving it and has turned into a real nice dog. so you have every chance of making a good dog just go steady with it,all the best and keep us posted.put some pics on so we can see him

Shropshire_Lad
He's a cracker! We have a springer called Tess, she should have been a Husky! a 250lb sledge would be a walk in the park! I have been to every training class locally and no one can get the better of her, off the lead fine and comes back to a pip pip on the whistle ok but put a lead on her.... She is now 7 years old. We have given up and excepted her for what she is, a fantastic member of the family. Don't get too hard on him if it doesn't work out. atvb Paul. I have cured his pulling now, I purchased a special lead that pulls their nose down/ to the side. And now he is a dream to walk. Just need to work on his recall http://www.animal-nanny.co.uk/gencon-all-in-1-dog-lead.html
liamp79
I've never believed in that saying mate! Dogs are great learners at any age. If you're willing to put in the time and effort they can be trained to do most things. Just don't push him too hard and remember he isn't a pup. Good luck and keep updating. Cheers Liam PS love the photo, he does like he's just woken up!

bruno22rf
This is my daughters dog and i can confirm that the new lead has worked like a dream-from pulling my wife over one day to walking alongside the next-cant fault the thing. This dog is amazing for a Gumtree freebie-he even puts his head in his collar for you!-he lives to catch his ball and doesnt seem to notice other dogs unless they go for his ball at the same time as him.Sleeps on his back and snores so much you have to turn the TV up!So far he is proving to be a dream of a dog-the whole family adores him. J@mes
We have also used one of those gen-con leads to get ours walking on the lead, but found our lab became very resistant to sitting on command when wearing one - as if she was sulking when she had it on. After visiting a trainer he showed us how to use a 6mm rope/slip lead and within 5 minutes she was walking perfectly on the lead, at my side, no pulling or anything. As soon as she got an inch too far in front, he took a massive step back and yanked her back to his side. Looked brutal at first, but worked completely and apart from odd occasions since, we don't really need to do it any more.
