tomburras
hi all i am sorry if this has been discussed before but i cant find anything about it on the search facility. are shell decoys as effective as full bodied? as i plan to get into pigeon decoying more in the new year and before i go and buy the easily transportable shell decoys will i be sacrificing any effectiveness in comparison to full bodied decoys? thank you for any replies in advance
kevinbird
hi tom , in my opinion they are as good as each other but the shells and fud decoys are much easier to carry. the pigeon only gets a birdseye view so he is looking down on the decoy so can only see the back . its far more inportant to have the decoys laid out right. plenty of topics on decoy paterns on PW. bigt1754
I paint and use shell decoys. I customize the readily available ones, and I find they work a treat. They take up much less room, which leaves more room in the bag for sarnies!!! Check the link below bigt

Redgum
If you have a dozen shell decoys and once you have bagged a bird put it up on a floater frame,(hazel wand and a coat hanger for budget customers) you will find some pretty good sport. Every time you bag another bird put it back out with a little v stick under its chin making sure its facing into the wind. I like to travel light and have never bothered with a magnet (as we have enough of them on the fridge already), with this basic approach and a good hide I have bagged up around the 100 on numerous occasions and it will work for you. The little bit of movement with a dead bird on the floater really does lift the sport.
Colster
I was in much the same position, I wanted to get into pigeon shooting but didn't want to spend too much. I love the flavour of woodpigeon and it helped justify owning a shotgun as it didn't get a lot of use. I paid £20 for a stealth camo net that a gun dealer had used for his trade stand at a game fair and lost the bag for and about another £20 on 12 shell decoys and they've worked fine. I should point out that my shooting is usually after the harvest and before they start stuffing themselves on acorns so they're easy to get in anyway but the shells certainly work fine. As said above the shells are great for the small amount of space they take up.
Cosd
£30 buys you 10 quality flocked shells from our sponsors. That's just enough for shooting throughout the summer with, another 10 would be good as winter comes round again; but you can buy those closer to the time. Worth buying well once if finances allow of course!
