Buffing up metal work

Ive just bought another gun and the metal work looks like it could be done with buffing up to re-gain its former glory. What would be the best way to get the engraving etc to shine again?

on a friends gun which had fingermarks etc in the brightwork, we used Peek, it doesn't seem anywhere near as abrasive as most of the others, or Belgom Alu gets a really nice finish on silvered engraving

Try Autosol from Halfords. It cleans all metal work without scratching it. I use to use it on my pistol's when they were legal, but now use it on my shotgun's/rifles on the chrome etc.

Autosol is slightly abrasive - not too much of a problem if you only use it occasionally, but try not to use it much on any plated surface, over the years I have worn through chrome plate on quite a lot of bike fittings etc with it.

I use autosol and I also have a 6 inch diameter cloth polishing wheel fitted to my bench grinder for buffing.
