Winchbottom Pheasant and Partridge

Well here goes for the report. I'm DoubleTap's brother in the 2nd picture.

Having never shot partridge before and after seeing my brother shooting both an english and a french partridge I was desperate to get stuck into some and when dad's mate bought the day on the Winchbottom estate the perfect oppurtunity arised. He organised 2 teams of 8 guns for the walk 1, stand 1 shoot with an expected bag of around 100 birds.

I pulled the no.1 peg for the first drive and we were walking the first one. A cover crop on top of a hill showing some magnificient pheasents for the standing guns. A few early partridge went back and one was shot by my neighbouring gun, I moved on another 20m when I heard the whir of wings and I turned to see a single partridge going back. I swung around and downed it first barrel and the picker up informed me he would pick it. By the way it went down it looked dead, but 10 seconds later I turned around to see it legging it off. I shouted accross to the picker up but his dog failed to find it and I was pretty cheesed off to say the least, having shot and lost my first partridge. No more birds presented themselves for the walking guns and only half a dozen pheasants were shot by those standing.

2nd drive, my team were stood. There was a high grass bank with a cover crop on top of it. I was still no.1 as we were goin up 2 every standing drive so I was on the end again and sadly out of the shooting. My brother shot a nice partridge as did my dad and one of my best mates Billy. There were also 5 or 6 pheasants added to the bag. I shot at an 80 yard cock bird out of desperation and a partridge that I didn't see til it was too late. We then had elevenses.

3rd drive we were off walking again and we had a long slog over some drilled fields which were horrendous now that all the snow has melted, and little presented itself to the walking birds. However, the standing guns managed to add a dozen or so birds to the bag.

4th drive we were standing and we had a cover crop either side of a tall hedge with trees dotted along it. I was no.3 and other than a high pheasant which I expertly missed, I had nowt over me. The walking guns atually had more shooting than us and it was just guns 7 and 8 who had 6 medioka pheasants and partridges. We then stopped for lunch and as of yet I had had a mare of a day, with very little my way and the bird I had shot wasn't picked.

5th drive was another long slog as the walking guns made their way accross drilled fields, my brother killed a nice partridge going back and I missed 2 easy shots, as did a few of the other guns. 3 parakeets flew over the line high but by the time one of the guns realised what they were they were well out of shot. This drive provided some very nice pheasants for the standing guns but yet again only 8 or 9 had been shot. at this moment it was looking as if we were not gonna come anywhere near our 100 bird target. We only had 50 in the bag with only 1 drive left.

However, on the 6th drive, the keeper pulled it out of the bag and I was no.5 which was the poundseat. The walking guns and beaters pushed a maize cover crop towards us with a wood behind us so the birds would be drawn to the wood. A single partridge got up early and came straight towards me. I tried to take it early and missed with the first barrel but hit it hard second barrel but the picker up didn't seem to attempt to pick it. My shots lifted a few more which broke through the line and I killed a bird out in front and the other guns killed a couple as well. We had a steady trickle of partridge through the line over me and the 2 guns to my left and we were shooting well as a team. The partridge came out early in the drive and by the time they'd finished I had 10 partridge down dead, including a very nice left and right. We then had a nice trickle of pheasants coming through the line and they were flying very well. I took a very nice bird out in front before swinging onto another, however my neighbouring gun was onto it before me and it tumbled in the air just as I was about to pull on it. I then shot another nice cock bird that fell about 70 yards behind me and it was dead in the air so it was certainly going for it. The whole line had some shooting with good numbers of pheasant and partridge being added to the bag. The horn went to signify the end of the drive and just as the beaters came out the maize, a cock bird took flight. The keeper shouted someone shoot it, so I stuffed a cartridge into the bottom barrel and folded it up in front of everyone. Although it wasn't the highest bird in the world, it was still realy nice to shoot it and have every one see it. So at the end of the drive I had had 10 partridge and 3 pheasant down, all for just 16 shots. I was absolutely chuffed to bits.

The final bag for the day was 48 partridge, 38 pheasant and a pigeon so in the end we had an excellent day, me especially getting my first partridge and although some of the birds were not massively challenging, we desperately needed to fill the bag and a few of the other guns said it was a pleasure to watch me shoot, so I am one happy shooter.

I hope you enjoyed reading this, sorry for waffling on but I wanted to write in a fair bit of detail about a days shooting that will stick in my head for years to come. Cheers, Cameron.

Excellent write up and what a good day. :good:

I can imagine your pride in taking that cock bird with everyone watching, lots of pressure and they are the worst ones to miss.

We have all taken a shot at that 80 yard pheasant , but they never come down, so we know next time to save the cartridge for another bird.

Ahh memories, shot just about my first everything there nearly 25 years ago :good:

Mum used to be the partridge keeper up there so I spent every school holiday, weekend and pretty much every waking hour wandering round with my .410 from about 12yrs old, pesky school kept getting in the way though :)

Could still tell you exactly where those photos were taken even though I havent been over there for years, knew every little spinney that held a pigeon and every corner to sneak round for a bunny :D

think I enjoyed it more back then with so many firsts to get, not that I dont still enjoy it just have to pay for it myself now

Keep up the good work fellas and get as much shooting in as possible while dads paying :good::lol:

Cheers for the post mate.

Dad shot there a couple of seasons ago and had an absolutely brilliant day on the partridge. However, the estate have started releasing a lot of pheasant and dad says it just isn't the same. Although it turned out very good for myself on the last drive, the 5 drives before that were pretty poor in all honesty. The partridge were very sneaky (which is to be expected) but the pheasants didn't want to fly. In many cases they came through the line about 3 foot off the ground which is a shame as the land has the potential to show very good birds and it has done until recently.

Cheers, Cameron.
