There is a feild out the back of my grandmas, and i need to give her an explanation as to why i would like to shoot pigeons.any ideas??? Hunter
Hey! I started off with club shooting .177 as well. This is a very good way to learn gun control, and how to steady your mind before the real deal shots.. .177 is great for all airgun quarry, and is often said to be effective for lenger range shooting then .22 But, it is a tiny little pellet that is effected by wind, and even a tiny blade of grass will nock it of its path. I use .22, not because it is a choice of mine, but because the amount of hunting rifles in .22 far out levels .177 hunting rifles. .22 provides a nice punch, and there are many more types of airgun ammunition to try. I have used my .22 for many years on pigeons, rabbits, and many squirrels. But every single shot is to the brain box, or neck. I would never take any other shot, no matter what range, especially on pigeons, as they are built with kevlar fethers that will withstand most airgun pellets, unless close range, and even so, theres a crop of grain and berries to get through to reach the heart/lungs, so thats a no no unless shooting rimfire or shottie. You can tell her that pigeons are almost a pest in many areas, and you are simply reducing an overpopulated animal that cuases damage to farm production gardens etc. Pigeons, (woodies not ferral) make a very good sunday dinner too, so be sure to eat your kills as often as possible Good luck, and dont quit the club shooting for hunting! I did, and quickly re applied as I noticed a massive drop in my accuracy.
beatingisbest
hey, im 15 aswell but have been beating for 6 years and have been shooting .22 rimfires, 12 & 28 bore shotties, air pistols and air rifles for about 7/8 years. it is good that you have started on targets with an air rifle and the fact that you are moving onto live targets. If i was you i would try to get onto a pheasant shoot as a beater it is great fun and you get paid but i dont do it for that, no honestly!!! if you want any advice e-mail me! i'd be happy to help! roblade
There is a feild out the back of my grandmas, and i need to give her an explanation as to why i would like to shoot pigeons.any ideas??? most important question first, does the field out the back of your grandmas belong to her? if not can you get permision from the land owner to shoot on this land? BIG NO NO TO SHOOT ON LAND YOU DONT HAVE PERMISION TO BE ON!!!!! Firstly, iwould like to know if there is a certain way to kill a pigeon,i.e. head shots??? ALL AIR GUN QUARRY SHOULD BE HEAD SHOTS ALWAYS GO FOR HEAD SHOTS next what caliber is better as i am thinking of purchasing a new air rifle?? FLIP A COIN, which ever you choose as long as you practise enough with it it will be the right choice join a club and get as much info as possibel and try as many rifles as possible before you settle on one rifle from looking at pics, just ask anyone on here how many times they have changed thier rifles over the first 12 months they started shooting. spider.20
hay there if you'v started with .177 then i'd say stik with it. as you will be used to it an know the range estimation quite well. listen to these chaps they know there stuff. an if they seem to come on a bit strong don't wory we'r jus trying to keep you on the strate an narrow to keep the public opinion of our sport as high as possible. remember when you shoot it reflects on all of as shooters spider
coupe312
its all about personal preferance. i have had .177 .20 .22 and .25 but always go back to .22. my reson is great chose in pellets and range or rifles. also help to be a .22 to sell on. a .22 carries a little but more punch behind it the .177. but the main thing is personal choise. thry as many rifles as you can see what you like a pick a budget. stick to it best you can. when you have a short list ask a few questions of which is bester. remember everyone ha ssome form of brand loyalty in them, even if bases on there personal choise
SNAKEBITE
All I can say is well done for starting out on targets before going for live quarry. I didn't :*) So all I can say is have fun and STAY LEGAL.
woodyfirst
Calibre is a matter of preference. there's pros an cons to all calibres, but they pretty much level themselves out. .177 pellets are cheaper though Make sure you have permission to shoot on the field, and when you do, go for headshots as much as possible. Always be aware of where your pellet will end up if you miss too, simple things like that are very important!
Lancs Lad
Hasnt the law changed recently regarding the use of air rifles by teenagers. Cant remember exactly what age it is, but I belive that it is an offence for any "teenager/Youngester" to be in possession of an airrifle, be it in a case or whilst being used. First thing is make sure that you are accompanied by an "Adult" to ensure that you are legal. Do a search on the web to find the relevant law.
