1st Attempt Home Stock Refinish

My Beretta 686s was looking a bit drab and yellow so against all good advice I decided to take sandpaper to one of the most expensive things I own... I asked around and spoke to some very (you could say leading) experts in the field and they sourced all the products I needed FOC and more importantly explained the whole process start to finish in great detail.

I started with this:

Not too bad but really open grain and fairly dull. I started at 400 wet and dry and worked up to 1000 keeping all of the dust that came away from the wood, obviously avoiding the masked areas carefully. I then used a few drops of Rapid oil which forms a paste with the wood dust and palmed this enthusiastically into the wood, hopefully starting to fill the grain. I repeated this step about 10 times with 400&600 wet and dry paper, having to come back and rub the excess tacky oil from the wood around an hour/45 mins after applying, something which has to be done because if it drys on its a nightmare to get off.

I was left with this:

After this process I used some TS95 oil, again palmed into a warm stock and forend to gain some shine, the final picture is only after a few coats but i decided to apply a few more after and had the wood looking like glass, although after 5ish months it has lost some of the shine and will need some more TS95 soon.

Just goes to show that a massive novice like me can have a crack at a decent bit of wood and make their gun look a tad better. Only tips I would reccomend to someone started a project is to fashion themselves a chunk of softwood to go into the head of the stock to prevent it being cracked whilst you're working on it away from the action, i'm glad I did.
