On barley decoying woodies

Took a newbie (yodi from the forum) today on his first day decoying.

Got to a farm I haven't been to in ages over in Cambridge, bit far from home so no reccy. Found the farm with 1" barley and nothing in the air. Last time I went there was probably a 1000 birds throughout the farm and we only managed two shots for the day.

Set up he decoy pattern into the right to left crossing wind, in a u shape with the outer leg much longer to get the birds to come in left to right into the kill zone. Showed him how to build a hide and having covered gun safety on the way up there we settled into our hide.

Within three minutes a single bird flew in and landed two trees away, so I stepped out the hide to take it down with the first shot of the day. Yodi impressed, we sat and waited for the first bird to come in as planned from left to righ; I queued Yodi to stand and take his first shot and he downed it stone dead. A big grin on his faced and he was hooked.

It wasn't busy but they pretty much spaced their interval of arrivals evenly. We finished the day shooting 11 and picking up 9 with 2 lost. I took 8 whilst Yodi hit 3 very respectable shots with to stone dead in the air.

Wasn't a red letter day but just as enjoyable never the less, Yodi went home happy with 4 birds to take to his dad and a fond memory of his first day on the woodies.

I did make one mistake and that was not tKing any pictures! Sorry guys.....

Meet my mentor Mr Essex. I admit he took me under his wing, but not everything he says about me is true!
