Axe
Its my understanding that the longer barrel offers a faster, slightly more accurate shot. And with a moderator a slighlty quieter report, over the shorter barrel. This is certainly true with the .22LR, or so i've found. But im sure only the most experienced will really notice much difference. The way I look at it is, if you get the longer barrel, you still have the choice to shorten it, whereas, if you go short to start with, you cant lengthen it.
skinner
thanks axe,i think i will wait for the shorter barrel, because i am fairly small,it might prove better handling.any veiws.
Axe
Well I got a the Sako Quad in .22LR and .17HMR, the stock is fairly short and both barrels are 21 inch. I fitted a Sak mod which adds about 4-5 inches. I dont find it any hinderance at all and the rifle though not carbine is more than manageable inside a Landy cab. All in all, its down to your personal choice i guess. The Quad certainly doesnt cause me any probs, with my short plump outline :*) . Best advice I can give is spend a bit of time in the shop handling the rifle a make an educated decision. Think about when and where and how long you will be using it. To give you a rough idea, the standard barrel without the mod is roughly how long the carbine will be with a mod. So get the shop to pop a mod on it and try switching between the two. And dont forget that 2 week wait.
skinner
please dont remind me of the 2 weeks wait, sleepless nights, thinking to much of this new rifle and what its cappable of,i will take a trip to the shop and see how it feels, ive been told that rabbits inside 200yds is dead, its almost unfair.is this range possible.
Axe
Well 200 yards may be possible for some, but not for me. Until I have shot a couple of hundred rounds through it, I wont be thinking of any shot much past 125yards. The 17grain bullet can get easily blown of course, so unless your sure of your shot, don't take it.
al4x
If you look at Varmint Al's site it gives comparrisons for bullet velocities etc for different barrel lengths there's not much in it if you just want the gun for bunny and vermin bashing. As far as 200 yard shots its very possible if you know the distance on a 100 yard zero you get 2" drop at 150 yards and @ 8" at 200 so out to 150 is easy further than that it can get a bit more tricky especially from a vehicle at night, but during daylight its very possible and not much should get away!
