Billy.
I know but i need DDR and it is silly money compared to the newer stuff Maybe the reason you dislike windows so much is because you no nothing about it? You sir, might be right Tell me where you're getting these prices from. I know Harrods sell RAM - are you on their site?
fenix
I have a spare stick of 512mb ddr 3200 you can have. If you want it drop me your address by pm and I will chuck it in the post. The match pair thing depends on the motherboard, and running in single channel mode isnt much slower than dual. Thats a great offer fenix!! :good: good man! You dont need to fill all the available slots but to acheive maximum potential out of slots matched pairs of sticks are used. Even if they arent matched they will still do the job well and you will notice the difference. If its that expensive for the old stuff try the tip everybody throws their old machines away, you would probably find the stuff you need, it should say on the sticks what they are so you should be able to get the right ones Not a fan of macs... there i said it its fear of the unknown :look: As its an old board it may only have two slots, should say next to the slots if they are differnt in any other way, apart from having slot number say 1 or 2, up to 4 if it has them. Old ram wont come in big sticks as old operating systems and tasks didnt require it, as newer systems require more probably better to stick with XP, good operating system If you have questions about the board do a web search, might find a bit more info Spicer

spiceychilli57
yeah suppose thats quite true im more likely to go linux based pc rather than mac, only have windows because i know how to poke windows when it dies like the iphone but bit big and heavy for me, and i would break it by looking at it
John-B
If the MB will accept it stick another gig of RAM in then format it.

Windows 7 sailed past the total user base for OSX a few months after release
Jim Sarakun
I know enough to keep my distance from these deceptively simple questions . Generally speaking I'm in agreement with the points made by coolhead. Upgrading older systems piecemeal often leads to grief and suffering with little in return. Best to either start with a 'bare bones' system or, as suggested, look for a volume manufacturer's sweet spot de jour - the latter particularly if you are going to be purchasing a M$ licence at the same time. And on the subject of operating systems, you might like to consider trying out one of the more user friendly Linux live CDs - eg Linux Mint 10 - if you haven't already. If you are just doing mainstream stuff you may find it feels more responsive and it should be less prone to acquiring cruft over time. PS For answers to your questions regarding memory upgrading try here. Yup, this is the best advice for your requirements and it will cost nowt, Linux is a free download, to a pendrive, or a cd. My pc's are 11yrs, 9yrs a 7yrs I have 3 and all are running Linux, though I did keep a drive in one with XP, probably the most hassle free of Windows creations. Mint 10 as suggested, is cool. Daveo26
Right, I removed my 512 mb sticks and fitted two 1 gb sticks then ran cpuid and its reading one of the sticks as a 512mb. Any ideas why? could the stick be corrupt? They were not new i had them given today.

If the computer feels more snappy leave it like that, if not its worth trying the memory in other slots. Some motherboards the memory is in adjacent slots for it to be in dual channel, others its with a spare between.
