paulf
I am giving serious consideration to buying a Discovery 3 (commercial) to replace my current navara budget up to £14000. I do a fair bit of heavy towing, the occasional motorway journey and the comfort of the disco, top speed and better security sway things over say a defender. The only thing putting me off the disco 3 is the reliability. Does anyone on here own one who can reassure me, on paper a disco 3 would fit the bill perfectly for me, I don't really want another double cab and i think driving a defender would likely play havoc with my bad back. gixer1
My disco 3 is easily one of the best cars I've had but it has been problematic! So far I have done a bottom wishbone (the oil filled bushes on these are common for going £120ish) a power steering pump ( not common and I was bellied out on full lock revving to get out of snow!, which it did! £150ish and 6 hours fitting!) a front hub due to a wheel bearing (not common £130ish) front anti roll bar spacers bushes (common only £1.50 but a few hours per end to fit) my car is now at 70k and is used offroad and a lot of it is bad luck but they are a fantastic motor, in hien sight I would buy an auto - not because I prefer auto but because they seem less problematic. My friend is on his second disco 3 and has not had nearly as many problems but it's just your luck. I have had/driven a few 4x4's and I know landrover have there problems but they are hard to beat, the disco is an awesome car and it's on and offroad ability is astounding for a car that is nearly 3 ton! artschool
i was looking at them recently but was put off by the stories!! that said my sister has had a disco 3 for years with no bother. interestingly enough i bought a pathfinder in the end, but i did find one at a very good price with one owner locally and that swayed me. Alycidon
Landrover and Discovery has an awful reputation. My first one was stolen after a month, some parts of it were recovered 6 months later. My second one, an Auto Diesel 200 I ran for 274,000 miles with no major problems at all. Sold it two years ago and its still going strong. My current TD5 ES has now covered just over 210,000, the electrics have been a bit of a pain yes and two injectors siezed up at 185,000 but it has been not bad at all. A friend has a TD6 Commercial, he has had it 3 years and has covered about 80,000, it is just starting to show a few niggles as you might expect. Another friend has a new 60 plate Defender, that has spent a good slice of its life back with the dealer having faults sorted. I pull a heavy box trailer pretty often, the TD5 130 odd bhp is not really enough when loaded so my next vehicle will be a TD6 for sure as it has a few more horses. Pheasant Feeder
We have operated around 10 over the last 5 years at work. We had major problems with one following a wrong fuel incident and one dealer who was incompetent to say the least. The rest have had the odd problem nothing major, but given that, today I was driving a 09 plate with 140k on it and it still drove like a car with less than half that. We usually get rid of ours around 160-180k so have had 10-12 years worth of use by the time we've done with them. The build quality is better than anythiong else we run (landcruiser shogun) and reliability they compare favourably. Copared to a Navara I think you'll find it head and shoulders above it. The more I drive them the more I want one.
Alycidon
I would quite happily climb into mine now and do a 10 hour drive, smooth, comfortable and nice to drive. A
