Pembrokeshire Pigeons

Took the hmr out of the cabinet this morning to try and catch an early fox,and as an after thought put my old sxs in the truck.

Well after an hour or so it was clear foxy had a better offer, and i decided to have an hour or so pigeon shooting,(turned into 5.5 hours)

I only had a dozen shell decoys and two bouncers, and the ground was solid so the shells were just placed on the floor,so i set up on an oilseed rape field that had failed, and just stood by an ivy covered tree just in the wood.

A couple of pigeons rolled in and slowly the pattern became bigger,it was then a steady drip most of the day,and the final bag was 24 shot 22 recovered, the other two were accounted for,one trampled in the mud by the cattle next door, and the other pounced on by a buzzard in another field.

Most memorable shot was when my better half phoned me,as we were talking a pigeon landed smack in the middle of the pattern,i shot at it with one arm,and a perfect kill

Another was a pigeon a long way out and fairly high was on a diagonal line across us,i took a shot as it came into range and folded it and realised it was plummeting straight toward me,it went through the trees without touching them, and as i just stepped to one side smacked into the ground where i had been standing, :o the dog looked at me ,and i'm sure he was amazed that the pigeons were cutting out the middle man(him) and coming straight to me. :P

Shot i would like to forget,is when a flock of about 50 piled in,i took aim and missed, then missed with the second barrel  i am sure if i had thrown the gun there were so many there it would have hit.

24 pigeons for 37 carts,1.54 average, not bad the start was the most misses,my excuse is i haven't had the sxs out for a while and i was getting my eye back in

It was an enjoyable day,had the sun on our backs, and even though it did not get above 2 degrees never felt cold. And Jake had some very good retrieves,a few pricked birds in the woods half a field away were recovered by him. :good:

Thanks for reading. :good:
