Snap Caps

Recommended Posts

What are your takes on snap caps? before i store my gun i always go over the reciver and metal parts with an oiler rag, obviously not dripping but enough to leave a shine.

I found when i use snap caps and fire them that it leaves a fair bit of tiny shavings around the reciver and firing pins and will end up clogging it up so no longer use them. I have also been told that new guns dont need snap caps as the springs are far better then say 20 years ago.

So what are your takes on this?

use or not to use!?

:good:

I only use them if a gun is not going to be out the cabinet for months.

I was told by a gunsmith years ago that firing a modern over and under with nothing in the chambers does it no harm. I shoot with a bloke who dry fires his beretta OU at the end of every drive before putting it in the slip. He has done this for years and the gun has never mis-fired.

I was told by the same gunsmith that dry firing a sidelock sxs would jarr the action however.

Has anyone heard this as well?

I've heard about SxS' that its not such a great idea! I find it hard to belive that its so bad to not use them or the guns would come with snap caps. If Beretta for instance thought they were so important and that they would often get guns back for replacement parts then snap caps would come with the gun. Dont forget after all we have a 3 year or 10 year warrenty!
