looing to buy a side by side, have found a nice aya xxv boxlock, raised churchill rib, lovely wood and in very good condition,

asing price 500, anyone own one, what do you think regarding price, thanks for your time

AYA make good guns. XXV I believe relates to the length of barrel if memory serves. This length of barrel goes in and out of fashion. But £500 sounds reasonable at any time. Might be a bit lively . I would recommend seeing if you can try it for a few rounds on clays first.

Hi,

Tad cheap for RFD purchase so could be a bargain; usually plus £100 to £200 but good for private purchase. I've had both box and sidelock and the box that I have now is pristine and from c1965. Assuming good condition, the guns from that era are far superior to the more recent versions - the boxlock currently retails for c£3300 and a certain well known firm of gunsmiths whose name appears on here occasionally says thay they couldn't actually make them to that 1965 standard without charging the price they do for the sidelock.

Cheers

I fail to see how with most modern guns being made using computer controlled machines, they can be inferior to old hand built guns.

Hi,

No problem, mate, you need to have some knowledge of production engineering to understand.

On a hand built gun the manufactiring tolerances are set by the craftsmen and are as close as it is possible to get to zero.

For a modern computor built gun, the manufacturing equipment, cnc, etc, etc, is bought to a budget by an accountant. This budget will determine the level of tolerences that the equipment can work to and hence the quality of the product.

In terms of reliability and longevity, the manufacturing tolerances set by the maker is the biggest single difference between my Baikal and your Purdey and your Lada and my Rolls.

Cheers
