Buttalo calling Roe does

Was out the other evening using the buttalo to call in a Muntjac as it has worked for me before. As the light started to go I noticed a flash of white in the dense woodland, was it a rabbit or a Muntjac that had spotted me and taken flight. I got the binos to my eyes and had a quick scan around, Muntjac have a tendancy to have a short run, stop and take a look back. I could see a dark shape moving around about 100yds away and it was responding to the buttalo, it was now quite plain to see it was a Roe doe. She knew I was there and could probably smell me as the wind was all over the place. The sound of the buttalo was just to interesting and slowly and very nervously she came out of the cover into a small clearing. As I was able to rest against an old tree trunk I decided for a neck shot, with the dense cover and failing light a heart shot that didnt drop her on the spot could have possibly meant going to get the dog by which time it would be dark ( though the dog would have found her quickly). The plume of hair that exploded from the back of the deers neck proved the shot was spot on and the doe dropped down dead. I have used the buttalo for Roe bucks and more recently found it to work with munties but never thought it would bring in does. They do get very territorial but thats later on when they are out of season.

Well done. Those Buttalo calls seem to be marketed more for the Roe than the Muntjac, I have one but so far it has not really helped to turn a stalk from a blank to a success if you know what I mean. More time in the field watching and learning is what I need!

We have seen that does will react to a variety of calls, usually distress calls of various types, when they have fawns. There was a doe in a plantation with a fawn and I was up a high seat for a fox and as soon as I started calling she got up and slowly started to walk towards me, she stopped every now and then up until she was 70-80yds away and wouldn`t come any closer. After 5 minutes or so the fawn came out of the undergrowth to suckle and I hadn`t seen it.

I have found they work best when your in a highseat or a hide, the deer will be looking in your direction for the source of the noise long before you see them. Long periods of keeping very still and a couple of rythmic calls then ten minute silence seems to work for me. When stalking you are usually hoping to spot the deer before they spot you, with the buttalo its can be the otherway round. Often I have sensed something behing me and turned to see a white tail bouncing away.
