Depends what you mean by competitive shooting?

I shoot Target Rifle (TR) and the only calibre is 7.62 x 51mm as all competitions you are issued ammunition and you have to use what you are given. Homeloading is not allowed.

F class and the other disciplines tend to be more flexible.

I shoot from 300 yards to 1000 yards with the 7.62 and yes they are dedicated target rifles, TR is shot with open aperture sights.

The NRA would be your best port of call as there is literally hundreds of disciplines each using different calibres and ranges etc etc.

Have a click through the disciplines in this link

and yes there are plenty of things to do with a .223, and I have seen plenty of field rifles being used at Bisley. You can also make your own little competitions up within a club, does not have to be to NRA rules.

Best bet to get an idea is register and attend an NRA open day, that way you can have a look, and have a go.

From the sound of it you shoot a 223. if so look at 100 and 200 yard Benchrest. the most popular caliber here is 6mm PPC, a small capacity case designed for teh dicipline but now becoming more widely used as a dual target/fox round,

They used to shoot this at Minsterly but these days itsas far as I am aware only at Bisley and Diggle, I have been a couple of times to Bisley and they are a good bunch of guys most of whome also shoot vermin/deer etc. You shoot what you bring at these events, there is no sniffyness at all. I shot 100 yard BR at Bisley last Sunday with my 20BR, no problems at all as long as you use non expanding match bullets.

Pm me if you want more details.
