Forestry Sale

Hi,

Has anyone else noticed the recent anti shooting brigade's activities? I'm not sure which outfit it is but you can tell that the information has come from a central source for local dissemination via the local rags, etc. They are using the fuss generated by the possible forestry sell off as a launch platform. It's the usual old rubbish but does include the figures on imported poults/eggs whatever and the fact that these are raised in conditions that are illegal in the UK (don't shoot the messenger) and also some pieces from the recent Inside Out programme.

The worrying bit which has always concerned me, but as I'm in a minority of one, have always kept quiet (except to you, Terry) is that they are now jumping on the fact that as we have no mandatory training, many inexperienced Guns will be causing untold suffering due to inexperience. To be honest, I've always thought that this would be our Achilles heel and that the BASC would rue the day that the PAS was not developed in the the way it was originally envisaged with the proficiency award for all three sporting guns. When you consider some of the comments/questions on this and other forums from people who are already shooting, if our traditions, knowledge and conduct continue to decline, then this aspect of our activities will be largely indefensible.

Cheers

PS My local rag is the Exmouth Journal, published today. I do not know if there's owt from the letters column on t'net

PPS Yes there is, but that was last week's from Kathy ****** Moyle

I am far from convinced that compulsory testing is a good idea; I do though believe that access to voluntary training is a MUST.

I see no reason why any one who wants to take up shooting should not make sure they get some training though, and this should be part of our shooting culture..

That does not have to be a course or formal lessons – it could be by a parent, guardian, friend etc who will mentor them.

There is plenty of guidance out there through BASC codes of practice for example to give a good theory base, all you need is the practical experience through training courses , coaches or mentors.

I also think that anyone who intends to shoot live quarry, and regardless of how long they have been shooting, should keep up regular practice on targets at the clay grounds, clay clubs, shooting ranges or shooting clubs.
