Did I read and understand that correctly?

Pick up gun mart the other day only just got round to reading it.

issue feb 2011 page 51

the bit about Savvas winning the right in court to hold another revolver

(if your reading this good on ya and some very good come backs for those

fools who don't know better)

So Am I really reading this correct is it now a case that after this court case

it has now become "case law" to have a HD pistol for large game such a deer buck boar etc?

As he clearly states if the "highly trained police need more than 2 shots to....."

And it is in the interest of the shooter for his/her safety

And the ACC (it does not say who they are if some one could enlighten me that one)

now says a dispatch pistol is recommended both for dispatching a wild animal

but also for self defence of the shooter should it be nessary.

NO offence to any who requires this for this job fair enough I can really understand it.

just seams a bit out if the above is correct and police cannot say no on such grounds yet we still cant have a .22 for target fun/competition or both.

was I reading it correctly?

There is an interesting question about so called despatch pistols. If you are granted one on your FAC it is reasonable to say that you need to practice with it and familiarise yourself with its use. Much the same argument as saying you need to take a deer rifle to a range to sight it in and become competent.

I wonder how that argument would be received? Where would you go? all the old pistol ranges have had pistols removed from their safety certificates. Also how much practice would be seen as reasonable?

Anyway I am putting in for a .357 Mag S&W for despatching bunnies.

Oh I'd love to see that one .357 for rabbits lol .22 maybe.

I'd say a full mag every 3-6 months my range is still covered for

anything that uses pistol calibre rounds so if I got a .357

self loader I could still put down "X" rounds per year

another thing that has come to my attention is that there was a death in Germany

(where its required by law to carry a HD pistol when hunting)

hunter killed by a wild boar.

Seams good old health and safety are coming in with this one.

Well you have to despatch them humanely after all, don't want to cause unnecessary suffering because that would be illegal. And I would need to become fully conversent with the pistol because it doesn't just happen without practice and familiarisation. Police and army need to train to use a pistol, why not a hunter?

I believe they are again for humane dispatch remember handguns are not banned

some old law prevents that however it doesn't stop them restricting access to

such items which is what they did in 1997- the target shooting reason was taken off good reasons list

so yes they are legal IF you can get them on FAC namely now for civilians like us the only reason left is humane dispatch.

Speaking to a few people at my club it turns out people are getting these for end of trial fox hunting.

I got a reply from the home office a few years back when liebour were still in power about

the .22 restriction.

the 1997 acts were never put in place for anti gun crime reasons just to stop as far a possible

a 2nd dumblane or at least one with legal pistols.

Today that is clearly somewhere between wishful thinking and shear stupidity from Ill informed

and very disturbed people.
