Fenlander
Whippet or a small lurcher, would be my choice for rabbits and rats, and if I'm honest, if you do'nt want a dog any taller than say 20" at the shoulder,I'd go for a Whippet, If you want a dog that will catch Rabbits on a regular basis,I would'nt recomend a Terrier, they may be ok for hunting them up and pushing out of cover for you to shoot, but wo'nt catch them on a straight run. All the best Mick.

Fenlander
I'd be interested to know what the benefits would be of a Bedlington /whippet,over a straight Whippet Natures Son? Apart from a fluffy coat ? All the best Mick B)

wol the hunter
i have a short leg jr.she is great finding and either marking or killing rats, squirrels, but way to slow to catch a healthy adult rabbit, but she makes em bolt and retrieve them once shot.if you want dog to catch rabbits and other vermin then a long legged jr will do job,but in my experince a lurcher would be best and they are good pets.
Natures_son
The beddy as mentioned will add gameness and tougher skin as well as stronger bones and tougher feet
lurcherboy
A pure whippet might be a problem in the extreme cold. LB
Fenlander
A well bred whippet is in my oppinion plenty hard enough ! how many whippets do you know that need there feet and bones improving ? ok a Bedlington cross will be a LOT SLOWER and so it may not hurt its self as much but then it wont catcht as much! as for adding gameness ??? are you having a laugh? I dont know a whippet that would'nt run through a brick wall to get to a rabbit. or rat. how many bedlingtons are there today doing a propper days work?with the ability to pass on added gameness ? Lb makes a good point about whippets suffering from cold in EXTREME CONDITIONS but ive never known a whippet jack through being cold ! in fact ive never seen a whippet jack in forty years of working them ! There are plenty of Whippets for sale ,but not to many Bedlington whippets crosses, and I think you will find its because the former will do the job better than the latter. Just my oppinion, but its borne from experiance, but i'm still learning and may be wrong, All the best Mick.

craftycarper
rough coated x whippet is best as said earlier they would run through a brick wall for a rabbit. The rough coat would help in case it hits barbed wire, a straight whippet hitting wire would tear its skin as easy as ripping paper leaving skin flapping in wind, its quite a regular injury i believe.
