wich type of cartridges

Recommended Posts

wich cartridge do i use ?, and wich is the best atm.Im useing kent velocity, shot 7.5,load 28gms,lentgh 70,fibre wad,all im doing so far is clay shooting.I wondering what the diff is between the plastic wad and the fibre wad ? if there is any,or would you have to be a pro to notice the diff at all ?.The size of the brass on the cartridge, some are small and some i seen are quite large why is this are the small ones the people trying to save money ? or is it a peformance factor.

What size shot is best for the clay shooting atm im useing 7.5 but would 8 or 9 make it a easier shot cuz there is more of them or is this not the case ?

and finaly i wanna take the misus shooting at some point what cartridge would be best so its a lighter kick? try and make it a bit more of a pleasant exsperience for her and not haveing her complaining all the way home about her sholder

any help much apreciated :)

I can only offer a limited answer to your questions here as I don't do an awful lot of clay shooting mate. I use HUll COMP X with Fibre Wads loaded with 28g of 7.5 shot for clays. They seem to do OK for me and are what our club sell on "Clay Days". They are not over heavy on the recoil but I would imagine that a slightly lighter load might cut down on the recoil a little. We have a few ladies that shoot clays with us and they manage the recoil without any complaints with a 29g load. I don't have much experience of other makes of cartridges for clay shootin so I can't comment on that one!

Our club will not allow you to use plastic wads - Whatever cartridges you use they MUST be fibre wads on our clay ground as the fibre is Bio-Degradable and the plastic wads are not! I only use fibre wads for my rough shooting as well for the same reason and I make sure that I pick up all of my spent cartridge cases so as not to leave the land looking untidy!

I doubt that this answer is of a lot use to you but I hope it helps a little!

Shot sizes for sporting clays,7.5 or 8's are fine.9 shot are fine for skeet but lack a bit of weight for most sporting targets.

Plastic wads pattern a little tighter than fibre wads but the difference is minimal.Fibre wads are more expensive to buy. What you use may depend on the ground you shoot at.

The height of the brass makes no difference.

Hull CompX cartridges are soft shooting especially in 21gm. They would possibly be alright for your wife.

I’ve been told/seen Fibre wads produce a more open pattern compared to their plastic counterpart.

If you shoot a fibre cartridge through 1/2 choke, that would be the same as shooting a plastic through 1/4.

This is what I've been told by a few shooting instructors.

You can also see pattern plate comparison online with a Google search - Makes interesting reading!

Plastic also reduces recoil to an extent.

They say in general, although fibre is ok, plastic Is far superior.

Well this is another very personal taste thing really,

I for instance will use the smallest shot size to do the job, Using No9's and skeet chokes, I feel will give you a

massive advantage, Big spread high density, but it will only be for full face clays to maybe a little over 40 yards.

It might be asking a bit much of the tiny pellets for an edge on clay at range and more importantly a rabbit at

distance clay, I have consistently broken the very long crossers up the bank at Hodnet that I would guess are

all of 50 yards with Blue Diamond 8 size shot. But again these are showing full face.

Hope some of that may be of help.
