sako751sg
Decent enough morning so headed out with Rab just after 4.Cloudy and breezy but at least it was dry.First ground and there was a mature buck but a stalk would have taken me too close to the farm hoose which wouldnt have been great at that time on a Sunday morning so held going.Saw quite a bit of activity but had to wait until about another 6 miles before there was one that was approachable. He looked a very good head, but was only about 50 yards from going off my ground so i covered about three hundred yards pretty sharpish, and when i looked again he was 80ish yards away grazing.Id forgot to take the stick out the Jeep,so rested the Sako on a post and waited for him to broadside.Didnt take long and on the squeeze he dropped straight down.Once again not the size of head i expected, but still a nice even 6 pointer and the beast weighs 17kg. After the gralloch and drag,i drove about 400 yards along the road and saw 2 does and a mature buck together, and a doe and a yearling buck on the other side of the road. The mature buck is one ive stalked twice before but he always seems just to dissapear, even though both stalks went spot on and wind was right. This time the wind was wrong, but i took the chance that i could stay to one side of him as i wanted him down due to the tree damage he does.He was rubbing away,so i got out of sight of him and headed in a line towards where i thought he was.I only had to go about 100 yards, and was in sight of the 2 does,so after about 40 they legged it into the trees.I thought that would have spooked him,but held going anyway just in case.I made the ditch, and was looking away to my right, when i saw his head bobbing along only 30ish yards in front coming along the ditch.I crouched down and mounted the rifle, and when he was about 20 yards,i stopped him with a whistle and sqeezed. This time the sqeeze was met with the all too familiar lack of movement from the trigger due to the safety still being on.He didnt need telling twice to leg it and that was the end of that. Next stop was about 4 miles away, where a buck and doe were grazing in a park of silage.I had to go about 600 yards, totally out of sight but when i got to my firing point no roe were visible.I stood looking for a good ten minutes, and was just about to give up when the doe appeared in front.I hadnt realised the silage was so long, and when i glassed again i knew that she must have been lying down and the buck still was with just his antlers bobbing about.I pinged with the rangefinder, and it showed they were both around the 220 yards so i lay down and adjusted the Nightforce by one click. The doe had clocked me and the buck sensed something wasnt right,so he stood and i chapped him.I saw the strike perfectly through the scope, and the way he dropped i had a feeling the shot was high. After 5 mins i went up with Rab and it took nearly quarter of an hour to find due to the long grass,by Rab.Unfortunately the shot was high and back, probably due to me not allowing for a steep shot uphill and allowing to much for the wind.Weight is 18.5kg and another 6 pointer.Thats roe number 299 in the diary so would have broke the 300 if i wasnt such a nugget. Finally went a walk on the way home through the wood where i had boobed with the safety.Had went about 50 yards when we came across a doe lying licking a wee kid,so took a photo and then carried on only about 20yards from them.I had only went about 10 when i heard my buttalo make a noise.Thinking how that had got in my pocket at this time of year,i sussed and looked for Rab,but he was about 3 paces behind at the base of a tree.I grabbed him and pulled him away, and when i looked in there was a single kid there. Not sure if it was the does we had seen,as i thought they would have both been with her.I gave it the once over to make sure no damage done, took a couple of pics and then held home so hopefully the wean is back with ma. Frenchieboy
Carcking write up and brilliant photos mate, a real pleasure to read and see! My only criticsm is the photo of Rab with the buck's leg in his mouth - You ought to teach him that he is surposed to retrieve the quarry not wrestle with it, that is a right determined look on his face though, well done Rab, he's real a credit to you! Cheers Frenchie.I think you are due Rab an apology fella. If you look closely at the photo, what you are missing is that Rab has a knife in his paw and is actually gralloching the buck, and hes only spreading its legs with his mooth to get the puds oot.
