deny essex
A question for the pigeon decoy'ers, in theese costly times even to go shooting, what in your opinion is the item/items you would like to add to your decoy'ing "tools"? i.e magnet , floaters , peckers etc but find some of the commercialy built equipment far too costly to warrant the outlay. I myself now semi retired have to limit the amount of times I go shooting. Its no longer financialy practical for me to go 3 or 4 times a week or spend as much money as I used to on equipment as I used to in the past 30 years in decoying. The extra time I now have at hand as you may have seen by my posts have been spent makeing and fiddling about with decoying equipment, the latest being peckers (mk2 version) this was prompted by a fairly recent post on PW regarding some commercialy supplied peckers (couldnt say the construction looked very commercial). We often see the "designed by pigeon shooters" label advetised on a product but some, not all, I would call a doubtful statement as to how long the designer had been decoying. Some of the DIY projects that have been made by members on PW does put some of the commercialy made equipment to shame, yes I know its all about cost in the commercial market and the "buy cheap buy twice" tag is often used on PW from guns to kit and often correct but some of the commercialy available kit is overpriced rubbish . I look for my equipment to be compact, light, easy to assemble and use even with wet cold muddy fingers in mid winter, and built to last the rigours of transportation for a reasonable amount of time at least. Its not a question of what is rubbish and what isnt or what is needed or not needed for decoying more one of the modern "gizmos" and kit you would like or feel a need for . Your views gentlemen ? KFC
To be quite honest I have next to nothing in terms of kit and have some great days. Not massive bags but good steady days of shooting. I have 6 FUDs and, once I've removed the breast meat, I put half a dozen carcasses in the freezer. I thaw them out the night before and set these out along with the FUDs. I have one of the lightweight £20 camo nets, face-veil cap, gloves, ex-MOD DPM camo. 100-150 carts. The whole lot fits into a falconer's rucksack, including flask, sarnies and a tripod seat. Add shot birds to the pattern and it's a good days shooting. I do have a rotary which I sometime use if the birds seem to be bypassing but I wouldn't say it's essential. I'm semi-retired and on a very tight budget too.
Cranfield
For most decoyers who have built up their kit over the years, the single most expensive item (which may curtail their shooting) is cartridges. In mechanical items I only have a rotary and a flapper, both were bought well and they are still going strong, despite almost constant use. I think that items that produce movement, without electric, will always be welcome. Hypa flaps and the new range of floaters are good examples.
