Wookie
Before I take him to the vets (again) I thought I would ask the assembled ranks of PW if anyone has had experience of sudden limping in a Springer. Ted (my boy) was out last night with me and was walking/running fine up until the last bit of his walk, when he suddenly started limping. I called him over and had a good look at his right foot to see if he had anything in it, but there was nothing. All his joints seem mobile and not hot, and he has not got any tenderness on the joints themselves. But... push up his foot from below and he yelps and pulls away. Not good. So, I walked him home and let him rest. This morning he looked as normal, slight limp maybe, but nothing like as bad as he had last night. During his normal morning walk with his brother, the limp started coming back getting to the stage that he's running on three legs. So, called him over and gave his leg another good look over. Still nothing in his feet, still no heat or tenderness, but push his foot up and he yelps and pulls away. I thought it might have been his elbow, but that seems to be mobile and can be moved with no discomfort, but as soon as you or he puts pressure on it... Anyone have any ideas on what it could be, or should I bite the bullet and take him to the vets _again_? Cheers.
al4x
Is it back leg? if so I'd be thinking a criciate issue
Wookie
Nope, right front leg. I did think ligaments, but nothing seems tender.
al4x
in that case if it seems better when rested till exercised the best option may be to try and rest it for longer. Watch for any swelling or heat which could indicate a foreign body / infection but otherwise sounds like a muscle tweak. With springers they can be a pain in the backside to get to heal as when it feels better to them they act like a **** and do it again. If it doesn't show signs of getting better then vets
Wookie
Good plan. I think he's going to be on the lead for a few days.

Wookie
Well, he had a day of walking to heel yesterday (which he didn't like) and things seemed better. This morning I took him out at heel and after half his walk, let him have a play with his brother for a couple of minutes. Cue instant limping. Had _another_ look at his right front leg and I am pretty certain that the cause of the problem is his elbow. Still no heat or tenderness though, just yelping when his leg is moved up. Dammit. I think I'm going to treat him to a trip to the vets.
fenboy
Dogs like us humans tweak and pull muscles /tendons from time to time my cocker was limping like a good one yesterday today he is fine. I would rest him up for a day or two ie no walks at all then re-asess him if he is not in obvious pain there is little point using your hard earned at the vets just yet. I know it can be hard looking at hima nd wondering if its gonna heal, but the are resiliant and am sure everything will sort itself out, plenty off rest, i had to rest my dog for 6 months, havent looked back since. Wookie
His elbows seem fine, and he just stopped limping overnight. I think being walked at heel for two days sorted him out in the end... He just needed rest. Mind you, it is the third time that he's had this, so it may be something dodgy.
al4x
Just take it easy with this kind of thing unless you rest it properly which is a fair bit more than a day or two they can keep re occuring
