Back amongst them

I've had a really frustrating couple of months. I've searched long and hard for an opportunity to get a good sized bag. Pigeon numbers have started to build on several pea fields in the last week or two, so i've been a little more optimistic. I would've gone to one of these pea fields yesterday had i not noticed a good congregation of birds on a piece of backward rape. This field has been relatively untouched during winter but just hasn't grown well at one end.

So yesterday i set up at 10.30. My hide was completely out in the open. I placed a magnet 20 yards to my left and put fuds and pro decoys on the bare cover strip that runs through the middle of the field.

Birds were coming in instantly. It was wave after wave of birds coming from the wood (the farmer tells me it holds over 2000 pigeons) around a quarter of a mile in front of me.

The only problem here was, they were coming in bunches of 10 or 15.

I made steady progress, and i got 35 for each of the first 2 hours. An hour later and i had passed the 100 mark. I was wishing i had taken more drink with me as it was hot in the hide and i was rationing water between me and the dog.

I made it to 117 before i was interrupted - the cover strip had to be drilled! I took the chance to carry a sackful back to the truck, laying them in the grass.

When i resumed, it was all but over. I stayed for a while to see if the birds might turn on once more. They didn't, really.

But i had a good day, finishing on 131 pigeons and a jackdaw.
